What's a Great Appetizer for a Halloween Party?
Good Questions

2009-10-29-Appetizers.jpgQ: I need to bring an appetizer to a Halloween party. I have seen a lot of recipes for desserts, but I need something savory and spooky. Any suggestions?

Editor: Hilary, first of all, look for a roundup of some of the best Halloween parties from around the web later today. There will be even more ideas in there. Having said that, here are two appetizer ideas we really love right now.

Fall Leaf Tortilla Chips, from Eddie Ross - Simple, easy, brilliantly good looking! Serve with some chunky green guacamole.
Rest in Peas, from Martha Stewart - Really creepy!

Readers, what are your suggestions for spooky, savory Halloween appetizers?

My mom always made these baked honey-soy chicken wings for us to eat on Halloween before we went out trick-or-treating. That could be kind of a cool app?

Or, stick with orange and make something like squash crostini.

I once made a cheese log - I think it was a mixture of blue cheese and horseradish... rolled in black sesame or poppy seeds (it's been a while). It was kinda spooky.

OK, I just scrolled down and saw the "Mummy Head" rice krispie treat... you could totally take that idea and wrap something like a filled, baked brie in gauze.

I was thinking about making these pumpkin phyllo puffs from Martha:

I'd swap out the peas in Martha's recipe for spinach dip. It would have the same effect and make a fine appetizer.

Deviled eggs could be made to resemble eyes - maybe stick a green olive with pimento in the top. Or bloody mary cherry tomatoes (though it might be cutting it close since they need to marinate a couple of days). Breadsticks with marinara could resemble bloody fingers.

We had our Halloween party last Friday, and for savories I did a Jack o Lantern puking guacamole, Vampire Blood with maggots (tomato soup with buttered orzo mounded in the middle) and moldy bread (baugette toasted with herb compound butter), bat wings (chicken wings with the marinade dyed black with paste food coloring), the deviled eggs mentioned above, and hot dogs wrapped in dough to look like mummies for the kids (peppercorn eyes). We had quite a bit of sweet stuff as well.
