Seasonal Menu Planning: Hors D'oeuvres for September?
Good Question

2009_07_07-Hors.jpgHere's a good question from Joan, who is planning ahead for her wedding in September.

Hi! I am looking for some help and ideas for a seasonal spread of hors d'oeuvres. I am getting married in late September. We are planning an afternoon reception with a spread of of hors d'oeuvres and cake. My fiancé and I both love farms and seasonal food, so we want the food to reflect the season, the location (we're in Ohio) and also be budget-friendly. Any ideas?

My own wedding was in September last year, and the food reflected the season; you can see the menu here. One of my favorite things that we served was house-made sweet potato chips with rosemary. Yum!

Readers, what kind of late summer/early autumn appetizers would you serve for a big party in September?

Pumpkin ravioli with sage butter or kebabs of cheese ravioli and roasted pumpkin cubes drizzled with sage butter

Apple, walnut and goat cheese salad could be served on apple slice instead of incorporating apples in the salad

You can probably skewer and roast seasonal vegetables (beet, squash, carrots, onions)

I also highly reccommend the book Entertaining Vegetarians By Celia Brooks Brown. There is an amazing recipe for spice crusted small potatoes and all the other recipes are excellent (such as eggplant olive truffle, orzo salad, sugarbeans salad, tajine).

Make chips from root veggies, like beets, carrots, etc. Then top with creme fraiche and bits of caviar or slivers of scallions. And any food that you love, once made mini, will be a hit: shot glasses of tomato soup, mini tamales, tiny skewers. For fresh food - go for a great herb mix salad, some nuts, slice a couple of grape tomatoes, add a bit of Feta or goat cheese, and dried cranberries. Very good, very cheap, and very easy.

One of my favorite hors d'oeuvres is figs stuffed with goats cheese, roasted in the oven, and drizzled with a balsamic reduction.
