Looking For: Chai-Spiced Cookies Recipe

2008_12_15-ChaiCookies.jpgWe love it when we can help track down recipes. Reader Susan wrote to us looking for a chai spice cookie recipe that she loved and lost. She writes:

A few years ago, Whole Foods had a fantastic recipe for chai tea cookies in one of those free recipe booklets they give away periodically. The cookies were amazing - I liked the recipe particularly because it gave measurements for the individual spices, rather than just asking for a pre-mixed chai spice blend.

Alas, I clipped this recipe before the advent of my recipe organization system and so, it's lost. I can't find it on Whole Foods' site, nor anything close enough in the many recipe searches I've done. Perhaps one of your readers found the same recipe and took better care of it? And perhaps they'd like to share? In the spirit of the holidays?

Well, Susan, you're in luck. We couldn't find the recipe either, but when we wrote to our friends at Whole Foods they very kindly passed it along. We also found a photo of what looks like these cookies at Jonathan Palmer's Flickr set.

We love spice cookies like these -- we may try these ourselves very soon. Here, thanks to Whole Foods, is the recipe. Enjoy, Susan!

Chai-Spiced Cookies
makes about 30 cookies

Fragrant with the classic flavors of chai tea, these buttery, crumbly cookies are perfect for dunking in a cup of tea or coffee.

Ingredients
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
3/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup powdered sugar, sifted

Method
Preheat oven to 350°F. Beat butter with granulated sugar in a medium bowl until well blended. Stir in flour, spices, salt and vanilla until just combined.

Scoop and roll dough into small teaspoon-sized balls and place about an inch apart on parchment paper-lined baking sheets. Bake until lightly golden, 15 to 20 minutes. Cool on the sheet for 5 minutes. Roll warm cookies in powdered sugar and let cool completely on a rack. Store in an airtight container.

I just made these a few days ago-- I found the recipe on myrecipes.com: http://find.myrecipes.com/recipes/recipefinder.dyn?action=displayRecipe&recipe_id=1687677

They're delicious!

These are very good and made the house smell great.

I added some black pepper - could have used more. The dough takes some work to get it together; I was thinking there was a missing ingredient, but just ended up using my hands to pull it all together.

Made these last night. They were delicious but perhaps more importantly VERY QUICK! They were in the oven in about 10 minutes, and baked up quickly. I didn't have the same problem as ts; the dough was very moist and came together easily.

I'd probably double the recipe in the future, as we polished most of them up as soon as they came out of the oven.

Just made these, and *loved* them -- delicious, quick, and easy, plus made the whole apartment smell yummy. With the addition of some clever packaging, these are a lifesaving last-minute Xmas gift. Thanks!

These were a bit disappointing. The dough came out too crumbly for me, as it had for ts, and I had to roll the teaspoon-sized balls of dough between my palms to get them to adhere before putting them on the baking sheet.

I had the same crumbly-dough experience, but they came out great anyway.
