Dear Kitchen,
Does anyone have any comments about the Kenmore Pro before I commit to purchasing? Wondering which is better the Kenmore Pro or the GE Profile?

TL,
Those of us who watch Top Chef are bombarded with product placement for the state-of-the-art Kenmore Pro kitchen. But how do these appliances work?
The Top Chefs, of course, never say much pro or con about the appliances and I've never been able to find much about the appliances online or in blogs. Do any of you have Kenmore Pro appliances or has anyone seen reviews?
What I can say is that I went through detailed research in the summer of 2005 before purchasing appliances for my kitchen re-do. I chose a Kenmore Elite range, microwave/fan and a Kenmore stove and fridge.
To help make this important and expensive decision, I subscribed to Consumer Reports online ($5.95 per month, $26 a year). Consumer Reports rigorously tests appliances and is a strong source for plain-spoken advice. I could not always match up their recommendations to what fit my design specs and was in-stock and affordable in stores, but I still found Consumer Reports to be helpful.
I chose Kenmore because I trusted Sears' reputation for servicing what they sell. Sears fell flat here. The fan on my microwave has never worked properly. I scheduled three repair visits -- twice the technician never showed and once he didn't have a partner with him so he refused to work on the job. I've spent hours on the phone with the sales people, customer service, and repair center. I'm embarrassed to admit after working on this problem for a couple of months I gave up and just live with the weak exhaust fan.
As I whiled away hours waiting for the Sears repair guy, I passed the time by telling myself if I could have afforded high-end appliances, I wouldn't have to wait so long for repairs. A few weeks ago, the New York Times published Ordeal by Appliance: Weekend Home Tales. The article says it is difficult to get high-end appliances like Wolf, Miele, Bosch and ASKO serviced in out-of-the-way locations. I had an equally difficult time getting my mid-range appliances repaired, under warranty, in the middle of Brooklyn.
To end on an up note, I can highly recommend my Bosch dishwasher. I had one problem with it. After Sears visited twice and didn't fix it, I called the Bosh number on the door of the dishwasher. They had a team of repair people here in a few days and fixed it -- with a smile -- on the first visit.
Thanks for sending in this question, TL.
Just an fyi: Chowhound does a weekly podcast with Top Chef cast members after they are bumped. Several of them have made negative comments about Kenmore Pro. Not that their professional needs are the same as a home cook, but check this out.
Thanks for posting the link to the NYT article. I'm an architect, and a lot of our clients want high-end appliances for the kitchens in their country houses. Perhaps that's not such a bright idea.
The That Home Site! Gardenweb forums have a lot of discussions on high end kitchen appliances (click my name for the link). I was on the hunt for a new range a few months ago and ended up buying a Bosch gas/convection freestanding range (I liked the features, price and the look - not too industrial, but solidly built).
Good luck with your decision! It's almost overwhelming how many choices there are these days in kitchen appliances (let alone the price range!)
Funny you should ask....I happened to be looking at them at lunch today. I found myself at the mall (which I hate) and thought...what the heck.
The "cook top" on display looks like a cartoon version of what a "pro" chef unit would look like.
Knobs as big as your fist, and poor grade stainless finishes. All set into a poor poor display with bad laminate countertops, and a badly installed tile backsplash.
I couldn't look any further....I chuckled to myself and left.
If it's any consolation the line most likely is made by Whirlpool, and probably not as tempermental as a genuine Thermador, Dacor, or Wolf.
My brother bought a 52" 8 burner Thermador a couple of years ago for his palatial "McMansion".
First night he thought he'd grill some steaks....fired up the range, and a 3 foot plume of flame roared up from the unit, burning his eye-brows, setting off the smoke alarms and causing a mild panic.....All for about $11,000.00
minipanda, we have the same Bosch gas/convection range! I love mine. I went ahead and bought the range because of my good experiences with the dishwasher and the good reviews on That Home Site.
One thing to remember is that Kenmore does not make their own appliances, they're farmed out to other companies. Bosch was making their ss-lined dishwasher last time I checked.
For ventilation, here is a fun and informative article:

Gaggenau Thermador and Bosch are all one in tthe same company...
our ge profile oven blew a $400 part with the first power outtage it experienced. after a tussle with ge, in which they said the fault lay with the power company, they sent us the part, reluctantly.
the oven is good, i'd get the extended warranty...
I am a sales associate at Sears in Willmar and I recently had a customer come in and is looking at a full line of Kenmore pro series appliances. One thing we couldn't find was a microwave. Does the pro series have a Microwave and if so, were could I find some information about them?
Well it's hard to make a decision on this or to give an advise, after all you have your own needs, your own standards. I've been your place and i have chosen kenmore parts and i don't regret it.
