Good Question: Music for Cooking

2006_03_15-damian-marley.jpgDear The Kitchen,

I cook mornings, before going to work; therefore choice of music is important to "help" me along! Currently, the CD I like to listen to during my early morning cooking sessions is Damian Marley's Welcome to Jamrock. I wonder what music people like to listen to while they cook?

Thanks,
Leeds

Wow, Leeds. That's peppy morning music! We usually listen to NPR as we stir our oatmeal, but we definitely can get into other programming while cooking during the day or at night, especially when Friday night arrives. We've discussed this before in other posts, like this one, and this one. But let's pose this question to other readers...

Leeds, I love that cd!

Although I started my morning with NPR and
Mos Def singing Black Jack

How about
Daddy G from the DJ Kicks series
Shaggy
Wyclef Jean's Welcome To Haiti/Creole 101
or
The Isley Brothers: Taken To The Next Phase

i'm a dork, so i like theme music. but then, food = mood for me, so there you go.

so, maybe a little country-folk when i make soul food, or a symphony while i'm cooking french, or something from west africa if i'm going a bit ethnic.

what do you cook in the mornings? i am trying to find some good, easy breakfast recipes that go beyond standard eggs and waffles...

SK-yea, it's peppy alright-just what's needed to get me/keep me going, something with a good beat. I guess I'm a recent AT addict-I had not seen the posts you mentioned, thanks.

Any new music recommendations for cooking are appreciated! Thanks guido, will definitely check those out. Keep them coming!
liz, I cook in the morning because I don't have cooking energy at night, so it's usually something to have later (a soup) or at lunch (yesterday it was salads: palm heart and artichoke salad with chopped red&green pepper, tomato, red onion & capers dressed with olive oil and lemon juice+1t of Dijon, a tuna salad with red peppers and capers and a guacamole. This while muesli muffins were baking. The recipe will be found on this site shortly-it's from new Food&Drink(Spring 2006)issue:
http://www.lcbo.ca/fooddrink/foodsearch.shtml
I work with what's in the fridge, or whatever new recipe has inspired me. I love making muffins or small loaves & freezing them, then giving away to friends & family when I see them. Great with my morning coffee at work too! At home I start with Irish breakfast tea only.
-Good for weekend breakfast: huevos rancheros! I love anything in a tart shell too, the other morning I made an bacon & onion tofu quiche that was very good, had it for lunch, but would be great at breakfast too, it calls for both soft and firm tofu.

I used to listen to this Ciao Amore! CD that my roommate got from Starbucks everytime we cooked.

Leeds, two more in the alt hiphop,
Lyrics Born, "Later That Day"
Yerba Buena "President Alien"

what were you listening to
before young Mr Marley stepped in?

I like a little country/bluegrass in the cocina too
most recently
Dolly Parton "The Grass is Blue"
and
Livin', Lovin', Losin': Songs of the Louvin Brothers

Spoken word. It's so nice to listen to a story while cooking. I've picked up a few radio plays on vinyl and it's super fun to listen to them while cooking.

Love that Yerba Buena cd!! That was one I was listening to to cook/groove +others, Baby Bash super saucy-hate to admit it-different lifestyle to my own - but it's the catchy tunes I like! Will get back to you with others once I check at home...some tex mex stuff..

country/bluegrass, whoa, you're all over the map like I am! love it. I like Bach, there's a new recording of the Brandenburgh Concertos that came out in 05 that's pretty amazing(store clerk review:"every note has a purpose!" he's right)-will get back on the details. +I'm waiting for my record store to get more copies of Concerto Italien by Mr. Bach, with Alexandre Tharaud on piano--apparently it's terrific (& this from same clerk who prefers harpsichord to piano,as I do).
Thanks for the recommendations, guido. I was once married to someone who plays 5-string banjo so I'm not quite a stranger to bluegrass though I don't own any, may check out Louvin Brothers.

i love listening to aaron copland while cooking
its classical, but slightly modern, and his themes are sooo catchy that they get stuck in your head for hours after
and then there's the connection to the beef commercials, which could be taken as a bad thing i suppose
but man, do i love his version of the classic shaker spiritual "simple things" and of course "fanfare for the common man" which is so very, very uplifting

Usually--- All things considered, this american life NPR stuff- fI'm an NPR nerd.

Otherwise a collection of death cab for cutie, dolly parton, postal service, iron and wine...

Unless of course I'm making south Indian food and I listen to tamil cinema music.

It varies but you can't beat something like U2 or Van Morrison; upbeat but something you can dance on your toes to in front of the stove--not quite too proud not to admit that yet. Plus, my neighbors across the way can get a floor show!

visited music store last night, picked up:
Monica Freire, Bahiatronica
romane Acoustic Quintet, French guitar
Concertos italiens, Alexandre Tharaud plays Bach
Brazilian Girls
Vybz Kartel's new one

recommend:
Pete Belasco, deeper
(instrumental: R&B, blues and jazz fusion)
Bach Brandenburg Concertos, Rinaldo Alessandrini
and The Bach Variations, Windham Hill Sampler

guido-checked at home, was previously listening in the a.m. to
Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Across 110th Street
Craig David, Slicker than your Average
Ruben Blades, Prohibido Olvidar (best of)
Reggae 2005 compilation
also like, when I need a mellower start:
Lara St. John (violin), re: Bach
yo-yo Ma, Vivaldi's Cello
Checked out: Daddy G (not my style)
Picked up Lyrics Born (70s funk style?) & Wyclef Jean (recognized 1 tune), Shaggy clothesdrop, all ok so far...
Yerba Buena has a new one,Island Life, has John Leguizamo as guest singer on one song+other guests. Not enjoying it nearly as much as President Alien, maybe 2 v. good tunes.

Love dancing/bopping around in the kitchen!!
And will have to check Aaron Copland.

leeds
cool - I know barely any of that
and I started a Baby Bash radio thread on Pandora.com yesterday with "Pon De Replay" to smooth it out

shoulda warned you about the new Yerba Buena...

if you like the Wyclef, there's more that are good

I'm curious how The Brazilian Girls plays out - I was wondering if it had depth. I have limited interest in pop - the difference between the two Yerba Buena albums in the perfect illustration...

if you're on the guitar thing,
Ojos De Brujo "Bari" is a modern flamenco
and
RODRÍGUEZ, Raúl Y Otros "Son De La Frontera" is old style

and (who said you needed more recs?)
the new Miriam and Amadou "Dimanche À Bamako" is pretty super cool, although I don't love Manu Chao and he produced/sings on it

and an old favorite (since you like Brazil)
Marisa Monte "Rose and Charcoal"
and anything by Tinariwen is cool with a driving complicated beat

yeah, I'm looking at my iTunes this morning
home sick

posted by guido on 2006-03-16 10:26:19

yea, will have to listen to Brazilian Girls a bit, I understand your apprehension & wonder the same myself-it has a different (campy?) mood about it...
Love the Monica Freire. The romane happened to be playing when I went into the world beat/jazz section & caught my attention. I've heard of Ojos de Brujo, thanks for the reminder!
Not crazy about Manu Chao either. thanks for the Brazil leads (driving complicated beat..yea!)
Son de La Frontera-you said old style, Cuban son?
The other group I was thinking of yesterday (tex-mex) is Kumbia Kings (IV, I think) - accordion, etc+ pop songs...I liked them v.much about a year ago.
if it's not too intrusive, home sick for...? home obviously, but where's home?

I'm in NYC
and my throat hurts like flames
trying not to really get sick, so staying in today
(good thing I had chicken broth in the freezer, and spinach to throw in...)

next stop, a nap. perhaps listening to

Son de la Frontera...
"Cuban Tres Joins Flamenco Tradition"
link on my name for link
a friend gave it to me, I don't know much
'cept I think it's really gorgeous

I love cumbia . . and will check out Monica Freire
thanks for the recs

Do you like Spearhead/Michael Franti?

posted by guido on 2006-03-16 13:17:34

ok, ok, in this case 'son' means sound not 'son' as in the Cuban rhythm. The description makes it of definite interest.
I have grown to like the cumbia rhythm, took a while for me to be able to move to it; great, though.

I feel your pain, I was sick almost all of last week with a chest cold, still have a dry cough remaining, but at least the appetite is back!

Hot soups, tea, salads.. and, of course, Music!
Has Spearhead done something recently? don't know Michael Franti...
Will check the music vaults for interesting stuff..

posted by leeds on 2006-03-16 13:54:37

Franti is the main guy from Spearhead - they started publishing discs under his name, and I've always been a fan. The last one (from a couple years ago) is great, but plays a whole lot better if you remove the radio banter tracks . . .

posted by guido on 2006-03-16 17:55:52

it's funny you mention removing the radio banter tracks - I have one to recommend which also needs the same thing.
El Gran Silencio - Chuntaros Radio Poder
I thought I had liked only 1 or 2 tracks, but on reviewing them I like 3,5,11,15,17,19,21,26 & 29!
Fun stuff (I like to live en mi Tierra, for one)!
Thanks for the Franti info, will investigate!!
