Good Question: More Sophisticated Dinnerware

2006_03_06-plates.jpgDear The Kitchen,

I'm finally planning to replace my college starter dinnerware set with something more sophisticated. I am hoping to find dishes that have a cool or pretty design, but nothing so busy that you can't find your food. I'm open to both modern and retro themes, but the dishes have to be round. I never got onto the square-plate bus.

Unfortunately, my budget isn't much bigger than it was in college. Anyone got any ideas where I should start looking? Thanks!

Dear Liz,

Without knowing exactly your budget, I'd steer you to the Crate & Barrel Outlet. There are a few dinnerware deals to be had here.

Here's a bright Fiestaware-inspired series called Citron. Dinner plates are $3.95. For an all-white look, the Café (16 pieces, $39.95) series might work.

You can always try Ikea if you're willing to brave the stores. They have a 60-piece Startbox for $79.99.

We'll turn this over to the Apartment Therapist and see if he can chime in with any finds.

my mom has the stuff from the first time around, and it is just as goregous and fresh as it was back then
this TIMELESS dinnerware
start off with just the basics, and expand as you get the funds
i wish i had the room, god i LOVE this set!

Pearl River has nice looking dishes for low budgets.
The only problem I have with cheaper stuff (esp Ikea) is how heavy it is.

If I was looking, I think I'd be scanning Craigslist or other places for used, or looking for sales of higher end new instead of getting a college budget starter set.

Sounds like a fun problem!

is my post (above) showing up as a skinny, vertical box on everyone's computer, or just mine??

Ikea has had some nice, simple stuff for cheap. It's probably available on their website, although buying in a store is ideal since their shipping is outrageous.

I registered for the Eva Zeisel @ Crate and Barrel when I got married and I love it. I actually got the Audrey dishes and the Eva Zeisel tea set and dessert plates + bowls. They go together beautifully and they weren't too expensive.

Ann,
It should be fixed now...?

Try Fishs Eddy (http://www.fishseddy.com/browse.cfm/2,1.html) - they have some great choices - some in fun patterns/colors, and also a great selection of "Everyday Whiteware."

I agree with above commenters on Crate & Barrel's selection, if it fits your budget.

I recently replaced my everyday dishes as well. I'm using the Vintage Modern Thomas O'Brien dishes from Target. I've had them since November and so far, so good. No chips -- which is usually my problem with the cheaper stuff -- and it survives the diswasher well.

I like their FUN FACTORY line of solid plates. They are known for the RED color but the other colors are great too.

I think of this line as a sleeker version of FIESTAWARE.

If you're on a very tight budget, the Motto pieces from IKEA is a steal at $.50 per piece. Unfortunately, only 3 pieces area available: a plate (scaled slightly smaller than standard dinner plates at 9" diameter), a low bowl (ideal for soup, salad, pasta), and a deeper bowl (for cereal or soup). Despite the smaller scale, the lines are really nice; and the pieces have a nice weight to them. (I just bought the plates in bulk the other day for my Oscar party since I've decided that I no longer want to use disposable plates when I entertain for more than 8 people. And I really love them.) http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/IkeamsSearch?storeId=12&langId=-1&catalogId=10103&searchType=product&pageNumber=-1&orderBy=score&category=%23%7EProducts&query=motto

Enrique amorcito,
watch out for the low bowls of that style

I got a stack (for a party of 12, exactly as you say)
and found they were very flippy for serving salad

'twas a sit-down dinner
more than one person,
my gentle self included,
managed to make the bowl leap
when stabbing a bit of lettuce

but they're 50 cents each and look great

LOL. That's funny, guido. Good thing I stuck with just the plates for my party yesterday! [I love the thought of serving a buffet-style meal for a larger number of people using real stoneware plates, real glass rocks glasses (2 for 99 cents at my local 99-cent store), and inexpensive-but-polished SS flatware ($4.99 per set of 6 utensils at Target). It just elevates the sense of formality a bit for an informal gathering. And it feels more grown-up.]

The 365+ series at Ikea is quite nice--an extremely clean design with a classical shape and proportion. And because it's streamlined white dinnerware, it can be easily dressed up or down. I prefer the soup bowls to the cereal bowls--a much more sophisticated look, I think--but other than that, the collection as a whole is quite nice. And it's proper porcelain, rather than stoneware, so it's not so heavy.

Liz - Another thing to consider is buying something a little more spendy (like Zeisel, Fiesta, Waechtersbach) in a line that you don't expect to be discontinued anytime soon. So, you can get 2-4 place settings this year and add more next year and not worry about discontinuations.

I bought 4 placesettings 5-years ago at Target in a style I still LOVE and they don't sell it any more. And of course I wished I had at least 8 placesettings and am unable to replace a broken bowl.

I love these dishes from Crate and Barrel. Makes me wish we had one here in Halifax.

oh, i love all your ideas! and thanks for the heads-up about the flippy salad bowls, guido. i like a bowl built up high, more like a pot than a pan, because i am so darn clumsy. :)

This post might be a bit late for your search. But I have had great fun with the Jonathan Adler dinnerware. If you want something urban and modern, it is a good value in a sixteen piece set. Also, look for stoneware or porcelain (mostly white) over just plain ceramic or earthenware. It tends to be fired at a higher temperture and therefore more durable. Found Adler here www.utilitieshome.com
