Here's a good question from Amanda. Can you help her?
My boyfriend has been talking about these small tarts his dad used to bring home from a Scottish bakery when he was a kid. We figured out that they're called "Fern Cakes," but I can't find a good recipe to save my life! Does anyone have a Scottish grandmother with a good recipe for Fern Cakes?
Can anyone help Amanda recreate these little tarts for her boyfriend? Here are a few somewhat helpful links, but they're all we could find. Can you do better?

• Fern Tarts recipe
• Fern Tarts at Uncle Phaedrus, finder of lost recipes
• Fern Tarts at Cyber Kitchen (This may be the most helpful; they suggest just making Bakewell Tarts and drawing a fern on top!)

Looks just like a Bakewell tart to me.

Fern tarts are very popular here in my part of Ontario (we have to hide them from my mother). We always stop to get them at the bakery on the way up to the cottage.
Try the recipe posted by pedalpowered, as it looks similar to the one the bakery uses.

I remember loving them from my childhood but when I was in Scotland recently I bought some they were disappointing. A good bakewell is not so dry tasting.
