Good Question: Best Storage for Loose Tea?

2008_03_28-TeaTins.jpgI know there are plenty of tea drinkers at AT and I really need their help. My husband and I are avid tea drinkers and are looking for a storage solution for our loose leaf tea.

I know I want something that is air-tight and preferably rectangular (easier to store in cupboard). My husband wants something that is opaque so he can leave it on his desk at work. We haven’t been able to find something that meets both of our requests. Any storage options or how others store their loose leaf tea would be so helpful! Thanks!

2008_03_28-TeaTins2.jpgHere are a few good options we like for storing tea. Not all are rectangular, but all are airtight and opaque.

Emile Henry Citron Spice Jar, $23.95 at Cooking.com - (middle photo at top of post)
Ceramic Tea Canister, English Tea Store - $19.99 (pictured on right at top of post)
Vintage English tea tin at Etsy, $5.95 (pictured directly above)

Also, if you order your loose teas from some companies, like Adagio, they'll send your tea already packaged in a good airtight tin (pictured above on the left). We love Adagio a lot; they are a good tea company to order from and their products are great.

Here is one more site with plenty of rectangular tea tin options:

Bonjour Gourmet - Tea Tins

Also, Google "tea tins" and "tea canisters" - you should find a huge range of additional options.

Readers weigh in - what are your solutions for storing loose-leaf tea?

I get a lot of loose-leaf tea from Tealuxe in Boston - they have cute little rectangular tins that you can reuse. Sometimes I'll get Indian teas from a local grocery that has Ahmad brand in gigantic tins - those are fun too.

These options all look good, though I wonder about the one with the wood-type lid...if it fits snug enough.

It's great to find people more and more understanding the tea leaves sensitivity to light, air, heat, and other pungent items one might store their tea nearby. Don't buy tea from retailers who don't understand this and store their tea improperly. Otherwise, what's the point of great tins at home?

Stupid tea retailers? Tell me about it, Tea Party Girl. I once walked into a tea room, saw their beautiful shelves lined with rows and rows of those IKEA glass "BURKEN" jars full of loose tea....and I promptly walked right out. I think I even saw them sell matcha tea right out of those jars too. Awful.

Teaism in Washington, DC has three restaurants, one of which has a shop next door for accoutrements for tea. they sell small, round tins covered in beautiful washi papers, and other storage. i could not find these on their site
