Good Question: Best Holiday Quick Breads Without Pumpkin or Cranberries?

2008_11_18-Bread.jpgHere's a holiday baking question from reader Ashley. Maybe you can help? She writes:

I have a holiday baking dilemma. I want to bake a breakfasty quick bread for the holidays but my boyfriend hates cranberries AND pumpkin. Does anyone have a good suggestion or recipe that I should try? THANKS!

Ashley, when you say holiday and bread - we have one thought: cinnamon! Sweet cinnamon is another classic holiday flavor that nearly everyone loves. If you're hoping for a quick bread, here are a few recipes we found that your boyfriend might enjoy. A couple of them are copycat recipes; they imitate the Starbucks chocolate cinnamon bread that is popular this time of year.

On a side note, we also love lemon. Citrus is coming into season right now, and we love to take advantage of that. We have a favorite recipe for lemon sesame muffins that we also bake as a bread loaf; it has lemon syrup drizzled all over it so it's moist and tangy. Serve with homemade lemon curd for a real holiday morning treat.

Loving: Homemade Lemon Curd

Do you have other suggestions for Ashley? Recipe recommendations too?

Gingerbread? I would eat gingerbread for breakfast. It freezes well also.

Maybe an orange spice bread? That sounds festive to me.

i was thinking citrus too, but what about pear, or maple & pecan. apples are still in season, and anything almond or with dried fruit would be appropriate too!

apple or applesauce bread with cinnamon and ginger would be great this time of year. you could also do a sort of apple coffeecake, maybe upside or not, but with some sort of streusel-y element.

i would love a good moist, not-too-sweet, spicy gingerbread recipe, if anyone has one.

What about Lemon Poppyseed Bread? I think it's divine. And if you have it for dessert you should toooottaaallly add a scoop of cherry cordial ice cream on top. Mom did this when we were kids and OH MAN! So delicious, I promise. I can't ring her right now to get her recipe, but here are a couple that DO NOT use lemon cake mix and lemon pudding mix. I think natural is always better!

Banana Bread
Date Nut Loaf
Honey Cake

These are my holiday staples when it comes to bread that you can eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert.

To find a really good Honey Cake recipe (usually made in a bundt pan), look for a Ukranian recipe. The good ones are usually made with Buckwheat honey and they have the best flavour.

Yum!

My local bakery does an insanely good cinnamon swirl bread with chunks of apple. It also makes great french toast, I might have to start hunting for a recipe and make it myself!
