My office is looking into replacing our disposable plates, bowls, and cutlery with reusable items. I checked IKEA because their prices are appealing, but I'd like to know if anyone out there has used the MOTTO line of plates and bowls in the microwave. In my experience, the SYNTES line gets very hot when microwaved even though it is deemed microwave-safe.
Do the MOTTO pieces also heat up to unsafe or uncomfortable temperatures? I would rather not burn any of my co-workers or turn them off of the idea of reusable kitchen stuff - we are trying to "green" the place a bit.
Thanks!
- Al
Al, we don't have personal experience with the MOTTO dishes, so this is one for the crowd. We're sure that some of our readers have these dishes - how do they work out in the microwave, folks?
And great idea about the reusable dishes for the office, Al! We applaud you.
You can get the MOTTO dishes at IKEA for $0.59 apiece:

I use the 365 collection, and nuke them all the time. Especially since learning that putting plastic in the microwave is a really bad idea.
IKEA does say that these dishes are microwave safe, and they say that about the 365 too.

I have had the motto bowl (the wider one) pictured in the middle for a while now. The can go in the microwave. They are great for pasta. The only problem I have with them is that it tends to tip over once in a while. Maybe it is because I might always put too much food in my bowl.

I too have the wider bowl (deep, deep love for it) and it's my go-to bowl for microwaving leftovers. I have some other plates (some other brand) that get much hotter in the microwave, so these aren't too bad. Generally, any commercial ceramic-ware product should be fine, and definitely better than 'microwave safe' plastic. Go for it!

A friend who is a potter told me that all ceramics were microwave-safe and didn't understand why this designation had been created for non-plastic dishes. Mind you, her items were all porcelain or earthenware, not stoneware.

I have a set of the wide bowls and they go in the micro all the time, without becoming killer. The tipping is a problem though. I love how they look and often use them even when I know I'm likely to dump a salad all over the table. If you need them for something where you might have to cut an item in the bowl - pass. They're best for soup and things that won't require working the bowl because of their stability.

I don't know about that line, but I have some of the clear, glass plates and they heat perfectly fine in the microwave.

I had the bowls on the left and they did get hot if micro'd for a long time (i.e. long enough to heat up soup). I have the clear glass made in France bowls from IKEA ($.79 here in WA) and they're fine in the micro.
My old made in Romania dishes from IKEA were a microwave nightmare, as were a set of white bowls from there.
I don't think microwave use is as common in Europe, where IKEA's designs are created. Personally, I would toss the micro--all I use it for is melting butter to make brownies--but DH would have a fit.

I've got the moto wide bowl (in the middle) too, and the tipping over drives me nuts. I think it's poorly designed--the base is just too small. The moto dinner plates also scratch ridiculously easy (mine got marked up by the second time I used it, and it's never been in a dishwasher), but I guess you get what you pay for. They do get quite hot in the microwave, but they seem ok.

thanks to all for the info - maybe we'll get a couple test pieces and see how they do. the microwave is pretty indispensable in the office setting - our building does not allow things with heating elements like toasters/toaster ovens. maybe we'll try the clear glass, as suggested!

I have the motto dishes from a few years ago. The bowl on the left does heat up in the microwave. It gets hot to the touch after 30 secs in my microwave. I don't experience the same tipping problem as others with the middle bowl. My biggest peeve is that they are very prone to chipping.

We use them in the microwave (using the lunch plates as covers, too) - they get quite hot, but seem ok. Not that we've tested the glaze or anything, but they're not igniting in the oven if that's what you mean!
