Better Ways to Store Fixed Stem Food Processor Blades?
Good Questions

2009_12_28-Stem.jpgQ: Do you have any advice on storing the blades for a fixed stem food processor? Because each stem has an attached disk, the clever new storage containers don't work. The stems also don't stack, and I keep being afraid they'll hit me on the head as I try to get things out of the cabinets in my small kitchen.

Editor: Lydia, we don't have this storage problem, but we wonder about buying a small plastic shoebox and storing all the blades in it? It isn't the most efficient use of space, but it would definitely be safer than having sharp discs loose in the cupboard.

Readers, any thoughts on this storage dilemma?

You don't even need to purchase a plastic shoebox: I use an old tupperware bin for which I long ago lost the lid. It keeps the blades safely contained, it stacks well, and because it's see-through, I can always find the blades easily.

Oh, an afterthought: you can also make small safety sleeves for the blades. Your blades probably came with light cardboard or paper safety sleeves, but if you tossed those out, you can construct new ones. Just tape together two pieces of oaktag into an envelope sized to fit the blade surface, cutting away a space to accommodate the stem.

When I had a food processor with that sort of disc, I got a wooden rack -- made by Cuisinart, I think -- that was essentially a purpose-made version of the towel rod solution shown here:

I use one of the deep drawers in my kitchen for dish towels and pot holders and I keep my blades in the back of that drawer with the blade flat against the back of the drawer. The towels keep them cushioned so you don't accidentally scrape your hand and since they're in the back, you can still easily access the towels. It works well for me.

I keep mine in a ziplock bag right next to the appliance. It keeps me from getting cut and I can always find the blade when I'm ready to use it.

We keep ours in a large, round tupperware container with the other Cuisinart blades.
