Good Idea: Growing Potatoes In A Bag

2008_05_12-PotatoBag.jpgLast week, we opened the kitchen pantry door to grab a new bag for the compost bin, and noticed these strange white tube-like things poking through the shelf. Wha? Upon closer inspection, we discovered that the bag of potatoes on the shelf below the compost bags had sprouted.

We live in a San Francisco Edwardian row house, and although we have a small backyard, space is very limited; most of the area is taken up by concrete walkways and a wooden deck. There really isn't a lot of prime real estate for growing vegetables. The front of the house has some space on the sidewalk, but vandalism is an issue. We really want to plant these potatoes and see what happens - maybe we could get a nice crop of fresh potatoes! But where can we put them?

Then we came across the Potato Bag from Gardener's Supply Company, which solves the problem of where to plant them. We have plenty of room on the deck for containers. Also, this bag looks like it creates the minimal amount of mess, which is another bonus.

The bag can be reused a second year, and folds for storage when the garden season is over, which is also something we need; we don't have a ton of storage space at our place. At $9.95, that's a really good price for a container. Hmmm, looks like we'll be planting some potatoes this weekend. Wonder if we'll yield any spuds? What do you think?

Wait, can you seriously just grow potatoes in a bag? Can someone explain this magic to me?

I hope that it works! I just planted some sprouted potatoes (and an onion) in my garden last week. We shall see if any of them yield fruit of the earth!
