On the anti-bottled water bandwagon? We are. "New York City tap water is the best" is a statement often uttered in these parts, and yet, we're not completely convinced. And we drink lots of water. With the pregnancy last year and the nursing this year, we like to run our tap water through a filter just for peace of mind.
PUR has given us two filters to test. We gave the water pitcher a spin (see review below the jump), and we're looking for a reader to review the PUR Horizontal Faucet Mount with 3-Stage Filtration In exchange, you keep the filter.
If you would like to put this filter to the test, please comment below telling us why you'd be the best one to do it.
We'll run this post until noon tomorrow (Friday) and choose the most convincing comment. We'll email you directly to get your mailing address.
After we get you your filter, we'll expect your short (no more than 200 words), pithy and eloquent review back in two weeks, and we'll post it with a big thank you.
Read on for our thoughts on the pitcher.
Last night we had a showdown between the new PUR Flavor Options Pitcher and our old Brita pitcher. Flavor Options? What's that, you ask. They are little flavor packets that are inserted into the pitcher's lid. At the push of a button, you can insert peach, raspberry or strawberry flavoring into your water.
There are three reasons why we bypassed the option of flavor. First, for the sake of a fair comparison (the Brita is flavor option-less.) Second, because when we want our water flavored, we squeeze lemon in it. End of story. Finally, we looked at the ingredients in this concoction and found it full of preservatives and sucralose (i.e. Splenda) and it’s not our business to tell you to put this stuff in your water.
We fired up both pitchers (leaving the included raspberry flavor packet out of the PUR pitcher) and did a blind test. In two rounds of testing, the PUR came out tasting the best overall. It had a sharper, cleaner taste than the Brita. The straight NYC tap had a slightly more chemical taste next to the two filtered waters, although it was barely detectable.
Since the point of giving up bottled water is less packaging, less plastic, less of everything, we're not going to switch from our Brita, but for those looking for a pitcher filter, we'd definitely recommend the PUR. And if it's pure, clean water you're going for, bypass the Flavor Options option. The idea is to get the bad stuff out of your water; why put more back in?
This is perfect timing- my Brita faucet filter just went kaput and I've been curious/anxious/desperate to try out another brand, given DC water isn't exactly getting high marks.

So I would very much be interested in testing this filter!

Please, please, please (this is me begging) let me test out the PUR faucet mount. I currently have a husband who lugs ten gallons of reverse osmosis water each week from the Water Store only to have it sit on our floor in it's ugly plastic 'ness' and mock me each day. Our place is tiny for Southern California and our family needs the space the water takes up to put prettier things in. Alas, however, I have failed in convincing my dear husband that a faucet mount system will taste good, be healthy…and will remove ugliness from our lives. If the PUR system passes the test, I will even send you before and after photos of the space the water used to occupy.

I weaned myself off of bottled water years ago when I couldn't afford it, and have been drinking plain water out of the tap ever since. My boyfriend, however, insists on bottled water, and I would like to convince him otherwise, both for the sake of the environment and our wallet. If I had the opportunity to review this filter, I would fill his bottle of water with the filtered tap water and see if he noticed, or I might have him do a blind taste-test. If the water filter could convince him to drink tap water, then I'm sure it could convince all of the other water bottle hold-outs to do the same.

Well, if I can test the PUR faucet filter, I can give you a good review on how it holds up against a PUR pitcher filter. My boyfriend likes his water room temperature (or faucet cold) which means our pitcher lives on the counter (not enough counter space!). I prefer cold water, which means lots of ice, which means our refrigerator filter works harder. Come to think of it, want me to test how well the fridge filter compares to the PUR faucet filter? Plus CA tap water. I can even put the 3 dogs' super-keen noses to the test! I'm coming up to the replace time for the pitcher filter, too, so it would be fresh filter against fresh filter.

I second s in dc...DC tap water is funk nasty. But I drink it anyway, because I think our Brita pitcher makes the water taste bitter. My curls will probably start turning to lead. So I'm curious to see how the faucet filter smackdown comes out.
My husband and I are both from Philly originally, so he and I talk all the time about our dee-licious "wooter." :)

I think I'd be a good choice for the filter. Simply put, several years ago my doctors ordered me to stop drinking anything but water. If anyone has a highly refined palate for this sort of thing, it's me.
I've tried just about every filter out there, except the "add a flavor" ones that just came out. Right now I'm using a Brita pitcher, so I can make a comparison against other filters as well as the city tap we get here and the fresh well water at my parents' house (which I grew up on, and where I still visit frequently).
Heck, if you want, I'll even write a poem about it. I'm said to have some talent with villanelles.

You know that little girl on the movie Signs (Abigail Breslin's character) that always thinks something is wrong with her glass of water? I am that person. I leave half full glasses of water all over my apartment, much to my husband's chagrin. I don't know how I do it but I can taste even the slightest difference in bottled waters.
My husband and I currently purchase bottled water. We're not crazy about the idea of bottled water but our tap water isn't great. We have discussed getting a faucet filter although I've been leery for the simple reason of spending the money and then not liking how it tasted. I think we'd be the perfect testers!

I would love to test the Pur filter because my Brita can't keep up with my nasty, NASTY DC water - it smells like mold, is full of lead, is often brown, and although I keep filtering water into a big plastic rectangular spigot thing in my fridge, I don't have enough for cooking, drinking, and putting in the cat's bowl. It's gotten so bad that I can't even wash my face with it becuse I smell the mustiness on myself all day. Gross! My NY brother asked why my all his sisters keep refilling the Brita, then he smelled a glass of water from the faucet - "whoa."

Hated the water in DC when I lived there -- ugh!
I have used a Waterpik faucet filter for years -- though I am not afraid to take NYC water straight from the tap. I love the fact that you get your filtered water right away -- as opposed to the long wait with a Brita or other pitcher. I think the pressure of the tap works better than mere gravity, as I have never found Brita water as good as what I get from my Waterpik.
One tip: filtered water is great for irons and cold-water humidifiers as it removes a lot of the minerals that cause build up.
And if you live someplace with heavily chlorinated water -- fill a pitcher with water and leave it uncovered for a while -- chlorine is a gas and it does leave the water after a very short time -- big improvement in flavor!!!

I would LOVE to be your fine reviewer - but alas - I have not a kitchen as we are in house remodel mode. Been living out of my bathroom as my kitchen. I call it, my "bitchen".
I shall wait on baited breath for this fine review as when my kitchen is complete, I fully anticipate using one. If, that is, the reviewer urges me to do so.
If you have a fully complete kitchen somewhere you would like me to have and review -then I am all over it. (Or a living room, bathroom or dining room for that matter.) Sigh.

I'm not a water filter expert nor am I knowledgeable about fancy dancy name-brand water companies, however, I, and the members of my household (my husband, adopted dog and rabbits) rely pretty heavily on our filtered refrigerator water. Unfortunately, it broke a couple of months ago and seems unfixable. This would be a great opportunity for us to test the PUR filtration system and in turn provide a thorough and honest review for AT readers. The dog may even give his 2 cents! =)

I believe that I would be great for the task of reviewing the water filter. I haven't drank tap water for the last 10 years. I have tried almost every type of bottled water available and I know what good water tastes like. My dogs also have enjoyed bottled water.
Yet, this Brooklynite desires to go green and do her part to stop the steady flow of plastic water bottles from entering and leaving her home. If you choose me to review the water filter, I will write a detailed review and provide pictures as well. I'm ready to try the tap again!

I grew up in DC (on well water, no less, which attractively shaded my teeth an odd color as a kid) but I miss the San Francisco public water since I now moved to Boston.
I think I'm a good tester because I just got teased for drinking so much water that I think something's wrong with SOME PEOPLE who don't have to pee 3 times in a night. Ahem.
The only bottled water I still crave is sparkling - I wish they made that in tap format. I would drop the old-school clown kind and break it, and the bottled stuff is so wasteful, so to the PUR filter it is.

I've been using one of those horizontal PUR filters for about 8 months now. My experience is that it's not very sturdy and the replacement filters don't always work properly. The first time we replaced the filter, it worked fine, the second time it had barely any stream and leaked all over the place. After I played around with it, I managed to stop it from leaking. Then not even a week later the LED turned red meaning "time to replace". The third filter is working ok though the stream is not as good as the original filter. It is my opinion that the faucet mount will not last longer than 12 months. It leaks and feels very flimsy.

I've been happily using my Brita tank for years. I recently moved to Athens, GA to go back to school, and the tap water just about knocks me out with the chlorine/chemical smell. I can't even make coffee with the straight tap water because the chemical taste is so strong. My Brita has been doing its best, but I've noticed that a green film keeps developing on the bottom of the tank, no matter how many times I wash it. So gross. I've never had this problem before, and I don't even want to think about what is getting through the filter in the water that I am drinking. If Pur can handle this nasty water, it can take on anything. So please send that filter my way. My four dogs will thank you, as they are currently being subjected to straight tap water.
P.S. If you ever need to test a showerhead water filter, I'm your girl! This water is really rough on my hair and skin.

I'm too late to enter, so I'll put in my vote for people in DC getting to test this. Having lived there for three years, I can attest to the vileness of the water. We should all get together and start a fund to provide the citizens of DC with better water.

Sciencegeek--thanks for the vote (although I'm happy to defer to the other DC-ers on testing this one out). Perhaps DC water is why our bagels suck so bad? ;)

Funny coincidence - my friend was just over and she made the comment of liking my Pur filtered water over her Brita filtered water and that she wants to switch...
view RJD's profile
You are all amazing and deserve clean drinking water! We are inspired by the number of people who have switched, are switching, or are even thinking about switching from bottled water.
We've chosen SassySally to review this filter because we're looking forward to hearing about the blind taste test she does with her boyfriend. But it wasn't an easy decision; you all made very convincing arguments. We're thinking AT readers in DC should get together and filter a ton of water for the city. Don't think we aren't going to pass on this idea to PUR.
Tune in this Thursday for our next Thursday Giveaway.
