Thursday Giveaway: Eiko Egg Boilers from Vessel

2008_03_06-Giveaway.jpg

Gift: 2 sets of Eiko Egg Boilers from Vessel
Designer: Eiko
Shop: Available from Vessel for $19 per set of four.

Remember these Eiko Egg Boilers from last week? We like their bright, cheery spring colors and how they gently cradle your eggs as they cook to soft-boiled perfection. They perform double duty as egg cups as you dip your toast soldiers into the golden innards.

Soft-boiled eggs always remind us of one of our favorite children's book heroines: a small badger named Frances...

2008_03_06-Frances.jpg

Here's a short excerpt from Russell Hoban's classic Bread and Jam for Frances. The family is sitting down to breakfast, each with an egg. Frances, however, is going through a picky eater phase.

"What a lovely egg!" said Father.
"If there is one thing I am fond of for breakfast, it is a soft-boiled egg."
"Yes," said Mother, spooning up egg for the baby, "it is just the thing to start the day off right."
"Ah!" said Gloria, and ate up her egg.
Frances did not eat her egg.
She sang a little song to it.

"I do not like the way you slide,
I do not like your soft inside,
I do not like you lots of ways,
And I could do for many days
Without eggs."

We have to disagree with Frances - we could not go for many days without eggs! Fortunately the bread-and-jam eating heroine comes around to how good other foods are, and she winds up eating much more than bread and jam. (Want to read the whole thing? Buy Bread and Jam for Frances, $6.99 at Amazon.)

Back to our giveaway! If you are like Frances' family and want to start your day out right with a soft-boiled egg, check out these Egg Boilers. Also, you can see more from our March Hungry Reader food and literature theme here.

To enter, tell us how you like your eggs. Hard-boiled? Ultra-hard-boiled? Soft-boiled and runny?

Scrambled with kosher salt, a fair share of pepper and a bit of cheese (and sometimes ketchup on top, eek! It freaks my boyfriend out).

i love dunkable, runny soft-boiled eggs. I lop the top off, place them in egg cups, and serve them with an arrangement of condiments - steamed asparagus spears, brazen hunks of bread, and a modest mound of sea salt. it's like a breakfast (or snacktime) "fondue."

Personally, I like my eggs boiled just until the whites have set and the outer rim of the yolk has set, but the yolk is still translucent and not entirely runny nor solid. Mmm... eggs...

Now I'll eat eggs any which way - sunny side up, scrambled, hard boiled, I even want to try pickling eggs (Mark Bittman has a recipe in his new 'How to Cook Everything Vegetarian'). If Mark likes them, they can't be bad... not like those big gallon jars filled with pickled eggs... yuk! :)

When I'm sick, soft boiled with salt and pepper and maybe some tabasco on toast is about the only thing I eat--made by mom of course.

Otherwise, sunny side up and runny, or poached. My favorite breakfast being Eggs Benedict.

Forgive spelling: coddled.

Porcelain cup with screw on lid.
Open egg. Insert into cup ... add spices / herbs/ butter / sauces / whatever you like...then put lid back on and cook to consistency you like.

It is like flavoring your egg then putting it back into a "shell" to cook.

Yummy and fun.

The only eggs I knew as a child were either scrambled to bits, fried to a crisp, or hard-boiled until the yolk was green. Bleah! When I began cooking for myself, I discovered the wonder that is the egg. Here are just a few of my favorite creations:

Gently scrambled with spinach, swiss cheese, and tomato.
Over easy on an english muffin.
Perfectly hard-boiled, with just a sprinkle of salt and pepper.
Fried, on a slice of crusty french bread with a bit of marinara sauce and fresh parmesan cheese.

Soft-boiling always intimdated me, so I never tried it. These egg boiler gadgets would make it so much easier. I have always wanted to have a real egg-and-soldiers breakfast!
