Plain black loose leaf is my favorite, followed closely by ginger tea. A restaurant in town makes the best ginger tea. They brew fresh ginger with apples and prunes for hours. It's perfectly spicy and sweet.

Twining's Lady Gray, it reminds me of drinking tea on the porch in Norway looking at the sheep and the lake below us. The perfect way to remember an amazing vacation. But if it is early in the morning, then English Breakfast is my choice.

My old stand-by favorite is dragonwell. I love the pressed long leaves and nutty taste. But after a recent visit to my local Japanese imports store, I am hooked on their most expensive green tea (the proprietor led me immediately to it)...a gorgeous little white envelope with a jewel-like green image of the tea plant. All characters are in Japanese, so I have no idea what it is. But it is so wonderful and strong, not a hint of bitterness, and a lovely emerald green color.

I love-love-love genmai chai, but my boyfriend also makes a killer breakfast blend. It's one part assam to one part ceylon
with just a dash of lapsong souchong (about a teaspoon to a 1/4 pound or so, to taste) for smokiness.

ORGANIC PASSION PLUM TEA

posted by JAYLO on December 22nd 2007 at 4:30am

I have two kinds of favorite tea. My standard daily is Nile Valley Loose Hibiscus Mint, created by a local professor whose expertise may be educating the masses, but his passion is re-creating the nectar of his youth. It's a feel-good tea with a great purpose, as proceeds from sales are used to fund water projects in Sudan.

But then I have a completely different favorite kind of tea, and one that can only be had with long travel, lost sleep and far away locations. It's the jet-lag cup of tea at four am, while sitting in my window watching snow fall on the 9th Arrondissement, or hearing the prayer calls through the steamy pre-dawn from a distant minaret, beckoning the faithful from sleep. These intensely personal moments are beautifully punctuated with sight, sound and flavor. I wish I had that cup of tea more often.

Tea is great because of all the wonderful varieTEAS. I like finding new ones that I haven't tried before and have to buy at least the ones that are pumpkin flavored! I am glad that Green Tea and Chai have become so popular that they are now readily available almost anywhere. And, tea parties are fashionable again. In June, the bridal shower I threw was an afternoon tea. Of course, the gift I gave her was a tea set!
