2007_12_05-CreusetGiveaway.jpg

Welcome to our Holiday Gift Bag! We are giving away one kitchen product each day through December 21. Happy Holidays from The Kitchn!

12-1-three.jpg Gift: Le Creuset Panini Press and Skillet Set in Kiwi
Designer: Le Creuset
Shop: Available from Amazon for $149.95

We are giving away a Le Creuset panini press and skillet set in Kiwi - a cheery green color. Click through to see a small image of the set in this color and to enter our giveaway. Please be sure to read the instructions thoroughly before entering.

2007_12_05-CreusetGiveaway2.jpgIn these giveaways we really don't want to offer anything we wouldn't use ourselves, and this panini press and skillet are just covet-worthy; too bad we can't enter!

They are very multi-use - even though they are advertised for paninis and other hot sandwiches, a press and grill like this are very handy for meats and other hot fast cooking. The set includes a 9" panini press and a 10 1/4" square skillet grill made from 100% enameled cast iron. They are both fully oven-safe, up to 400F.

To enter the giveaway, please tell us what kind of hot sandwich you'd make with this grill. Any winter favorites? Leave the comment in the comment section below by 8:59 p.m. PT/11:59 ET on FRIDAY, December 7th. The winner will be selected at random.

Please, only one comment per person per giveaway post. Duplicate or unqualified comments will be discarded. I would make my favorite sandwich in favor of the pan's French origins: a croque monsieur. Good ham, swiss or gruyere, a slathering of dijon mustard (and my little addition: mayo), covered in butter and toasted. Then, a quick transfer to the oven to melt some more cheese on top. Mmmm!

My absolute favorite is: first you take two slices of rustic rosemary sourdough bread, spread some homemade kalamata olive tapenade on one side of both slices, then on one slice put a couple of slices fresh vine ripened tomato on top of the tapenade, then put a couple of basil leaves, and then top with a couple of slices of fresh buffalo mozzarella, put the other tapenade covered slice of bread on top of the mozzarella. Light coat both slices of bread with a little olive oil and "panini" it for a few minutes until golden brown, crusty and oozing tasty melted cheese. When the tomatoes aren't in season, I'll just leave them off.

I think I'd turn my kitchen into a food lab and experiment with different ingredients to find the.best.pannini.ever. It would definitely involve cheese - goat cheese, maybe feta, maybe harvarti, perhaps a sprinkling of asiago. Then bring on the marinated red peppers, the hot peppers, the diced kalamatas or the capers. Shred the beef, or the chicken, or the portabellos. In general I'd have a pannini party and let people go nuts.

And it's in kiwi too! Cute!

Oh just where do I begin?

The first panini would probably have to be a delicious mozzarella and black olive tapenade, grilled to perfection until the cheese starts to melt. The bread has to be a sturdy rye with a nice hearty flavor. Multi-grain batard? Oh perhaps rye boule? I'll wait for the pan to arrive to let the inspiration would strike.

On a sweeter note, a combination of quince jam and goat cheese would marry to create a wonderful mouthwatering flavor fest. If you are thinking brioche - forget it, that would only spoil things. The bread has to be substantial enough to provide a pleasing counter-tone to the jam sweetness.

I guess that'll do it for now. :)

I think a better question is what kind of sandwich WOULDN'T I make with this pan! The first that comes to mind is my favorite 'little kid lunch' of grilled bologna and cheese on white with a bowl of cream of tomato soup garnished with Cheez-its. Day two, it would have to be capricola and asiago on scali bread spread with a thin layer of dijon mustard before grilling. Day Three, I think a breakfast sandwich of thinly sliced Canadian bacon and an egg over medium with extra pepper on a Wolferman's sourdough english muffin. Damn. Now I'm really hungry.

That's the beauty---the possibilities are nearly endless. I'd use the panini press to focus more on vegetables and spreads, and less on meat. It's my resolution for the new year beginning today to rely less on meat, and I'm hoping my partner stays amenable to that, but for him (and maybe me) part of the trick will be to keep presentation and preparation interesting. That's one reason why the panini press would be brilliant: it ensures that we keep licking our chops, figuring out the perfect combination of flavors.

I would recreate my favorite panini from our favorite restaurant in Manila.

We used to order the same thing every time we visited Area Cafe on the third floor (of six) of MegaMall. It was a refuge from the constant noise of the huge city.

It had grilled eggplant, fresh basil, a marinara sauce, and feta cheese. Always served with chips and aeoli. I usually had it with a latte (cafe style, not Starbuck's).

Marinate the chicken breasts with olive oil, with salt and pepper.

Cook on the pan for about 10 minutes.

Cut into thin slices.

For each Panini, cut the Pide bread in half lengthways and spread base with the guacomele, sliced chicken and sliced Brie, camembert or feta cheese.

Place the Panini lid on top of the sandwich fillings and brush or spray lightly with olive oil & cook until golden and the cheese is melted.

When I was living in New York City a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant opened up around the corner from my work that sold nothing but grilled cheese! This was my first introduction to what is now my favorite sandwich: Two thick pieces of a hearty wholegrain bread spread with kalamata olive tapenade. Thick slices of juicey tomato. And lots of high-quality extra sharp cheddar. Slathered with butter and toasted to perfection with a panini press. Of course I haven't had a panini since I was diagnosed with celiac disease and had to become gluten-free, but if I had a panini press of my own I could relive the deliciousness of my favorite sandwich, this time on gluten-free bread.

I know that this will no doubt disgust AT readers... in fact it's a little gross to me too. However, I grew up in rural Iowa, and everyday that it is a little chilly and damp outside here in SF/EASTBAY (which is a large chunk of the winter months) I relish my childhood, biting into my grandma's special grilled cheese sandwhich. No gruyere, no brie or even sharp cheddar. No, this sandwich of sandwiches was made with Velveeta sliced off the block. The bread was squishy white Wonderbread from the day-old bakery shop slathered on both outsides with a healthy (or not so) layer of real soft butter out of the giant tub in the refrigerator. While the first side of the sandwich toasted on the skillet (we didn't have a fancy panini pan!) she would start to ladle out the first bowl of condensed Campbell's tomato soup into a big mug. mmmm Even though I've grown up, moved to California and begun to explore much more exciting meals... there's something really tasty with gram's highly processed, industrial produced winter wonderfulness.

Be sure to rub the outside of some good ciabatta with olive oil, then put thick slices of mozzarella with some basil, roma tomatoes and a drizzle of good quality balsamic vinegar. Options include lemon zest, capers and prosciutto.

She is an AMAZING cook and what better way to celebrate her and her cooking skills than to use ingredients (that she uses often) which not only conjure up a good hunger in the belly, but also takes me on a tiny journey full of loved memories in every delicious bite.

Ingredients include
2 PIECES HOMEMADE SOUR CREAM DILL BREAD
LIGHTLY SAUT'EED MICHIGAN MOREL MUSHROOMS, FRESH ASPARAGUS, AND ONE GARLIC CLOVE CRUSHED

DASH OF GARLIC SALT AND FRESH PEPPER
LIGHT HERBED CREAM CHEESE
