Post-Holiday Gift Guide: Sigg Water Bottles

2008_01_02-Sigg.jpg

We spend a lot of time before the holidays rounding up good gifts (or un-gifts, as the case may be) but we realized that many of the best gift ideas come after the holidays, as we look at the stuff that thoughtful people gave us. We'll post a few of our favorite kitchen and food-related gifts from this holiday season, starting with these Sigg water bottles. Throw in your favorite food-related gifts too!

Sigg is considered the high end, luxe version of a well-made water bottle, and we can see why...

Manufactured for over a hundred years in Switzerland, the Sigg water bottle is a favorite of hikers and campers. Each bottle is extruded from a single piece of aluminum so there are no seams, and no plastic anywhere. We have been seeing more and more on the suspicious effects of plastic and have sworn off plastic bottles entirely.

So these bottles have the benefit of being reusable and healthy, and they are lined with a no-leach lining that doesn't add any taste to your water whatsoever. They are also incredibly lightweight; we couldn't believe how light they were, considering their sturdy construction. The bottles are well-insulated too, and you can use them for both hot and cold beverages.

We bought at least five as gifts this Christmas, including one to keep and it's been in use every day.

They're available at Amazon and through MySigg.com. Prices vary, depending on size, but they run from about $16 to $22.

This may be a weird food-related gift, but my grandmother bought my husband and I a new Oneida silverware set, including serving pieces. It's one of those things that you don't realize that you need until you get it-- we'd been using the same mix-and-match, hand-me-down utensils that we'd had since I graduated from college. I now feel like a "real" adult!

Is aluminum production more harmful to the environment than stainless steel production? It may just be splitting hairs but I use Klean Kanteen instead of Sigg b/c the Klean Kanteen is made of stainless steel.

My boyfriend and I have been using SIGG bottles for over a year now - they are fantastic! (and nearly indestructible)

I chose Kleen Kanteen over Sigg because the Kleen Kanteen has a wide mouth that makes the inside of the bottle easy to wash with a sponge. A friend with a Sigg has to buy special tablets to drop inside for cleaning.

I looked t the FAQs on the SIGG site, which answered a lot of my questions, including this helpful bit on how to clean them...

"Rinsing your SIGG thoroughly under the faucet with warm, soapy water at the end of every day and letting it air dry with the top off provides sufficient cleaning in most cases. When more thorough cleaning is required, you can use baking soda and vinegar. For tough jobs, pick up some SIGG cleaning tablets and a SIGG brush. Do not use a hard bristled brush to clean the interior of your SIGG bottle as this may damage the liner."

They also explain not to put them in the freezer, but a fridge or a cooler is fine.

I think I'll get these as valentine's day gifts for kids I know whose moms currently reuse plastic water bottles until grotty...
