Are you awash in pole beans, with nary a ripe tomato? Or perhaps you have a bumper crop of tomatoes and no zucchini this year. What if you could find a fellow gardener nearby who wanted to swap you some zucchini for some tomatoes? Wouldn't that be great?
Well, VeggieTrader, a brand new website for gardeners, is designed to do this very thing.
VeggieTrader was set up to deal with the bonanza of homegrown fruit, herbs, and vegetables from people's gardens. They say that a lot of this bounty goes to waste, from either not being able to pick the fruit tree or just not being able to eat all those squash. So VeggieTrader was launched with the hope of connecting lots of people to one another with fresh, local, sustainable food for sale or trade.
Obviously the success and usefulness of this site will depend on the amount of people who sign up and use it. We found only a couple of people in our area who have produce to offer. But only 6000 people are currently using it (we imagine that many of these are in the Bay Area!) and as it grows perhaps this will be a great resource for us all to exchange our harvest and to meet other gardeners in our area.
