The Seed Report: Day 3

2008_05_07-Lettuce2.jpgWe planted our seeds on Sunday evening, so today is the third full day that they've been in their little nests of peat and water. But look at them - already we're seeing a little growth! More photos below...

2008_05_07-AllPlants.jpgAlmost everything we planted is showing some signs of life, with the exception of the beets up top.

2008_05_07-Lettuce.jpgThese tiny sprouts, scarcely bigger than a hair right now, will eventually be a mesclun array of lettuces.

2008_05_07-Beans.jpgYou can see the bean stalks just beginning to unfurl under the soil.

2008_05_07-Radish.jpgThe tiny, tiny radish sprouts already have the telltale traces of red veins that will bulge out of their fullgrown leaves.

I'm wondering why you are starting beets in peat pellets? They are definitely best directly sowed.

If it's weather related beets do well in cooler weather.

Same for lettuce seeds, I haven't ever started them indoors or in pots/pellets.

Good to know, angelfunk - I'm sort of making this up as I go! Beets were a last minute thing, and I still need to sort out a pot to put them in. Also, we are about a week away fro our last frost date here so I was being a little extra careful.
