The Seed Report: Day 11

2008_05_15-Garden01.jpgOur seeds sprouted too fast! We had to shove them ignominiously into too-crowded pots before going away for a week; we're crossing our fingers and hoping that they stay healthy and safe while we're gone. Here's a peek at our planting...

Up top, our leggy seedlings, which had only been in their peat pellets for about 8 or 9 days. Most of them were seeds that generally need about 2 weeks to germinate, so we thought we'd be fine to go away and then plant when we came back.

2008_05_15-Garden02.jpgBut no, they shot up! Look at those bean plants, above. They are in just one pot with some cucumbers (which tend to take over) so we will probably shift these into a different pot or pinch off a couple when we get back next week.

2008_05_15-Garden04.jpgHere is one of the long boxes we put our new vegetable plants in. We filled it with organic potting soil, wet it down a bit, then turned it over with a hand-rake.

2008_05_15-Garden03.jpgThen we peeled the netting off the peat pellets the seeds germinated in and pressed them into holes in the soil.

We were pressed for time and space so some of these may get shifted around a bit when we get back.

I tried sprouting things like herbs and lettuces. Some did well and then we had the two So Cal heat waves in April which toasted most of them. I'm not such a good plant mom, but my really great mom who is a GREAT plant mom, said keep watering them, they'll sprout. And she was right, some of the lettuces have sprouted again. She transplanted my little babies into pots I took to her house and I brought them back to mine and gave me some for my herbs that got too moldy to compensate for the heat wave. None have gone into shock. And now we have a heat wave again....hope I've learned my lesson.
