apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Our Small San Francisco Container Garden

2008_05_23-SFContainerGarden.jpgWe don't really have a lot of room to garden at our San Francisco Edwardian row house. Our backyard faces north and doesn't get enough light to grow vegetables, and our south-facing front stoop had very little real estate. We're limited to whatever containers we can fit on our sunny front stoop.

Last year, we had several container herbs, strawberries, and vegetables growing on the stoop and some sunflowers growing in the sidewalk. This year, we decided we weren't going to bother - it's a lot of work, we don't have enough space to get a lot of yield, and the plants we grew out front were constantly vandalized.

This month is garden month at the Kitchn, and seeing all the posts about gardening ideas, the photos of Faith's seedlings, and Shayna's carrots and beets over at our sister site, Apartment Therapy SF. The final nail in the coffin for us came when we visited the edible gardens at COPIA in Napa last weekend. Hot under the collar, we rushed to the garden store and purchased a ruby seedless grape plant, a patio tomato seedling, sage, rosemary, mint, and an artichoke.

Well, it looks like we're gardening this year, after all.

Try using your windowsills, too. I have cilantro and flat-leaf parsley growing in my kitchen window and a 3' lemon tree growing in the living room (it would be on the patio if I had one).

I'm curious where you got the rectangular container for the lettuce? My local nursery (Summerwinds) had nothing similar, nor did OSH.

KimberlyM: I got it at Flowercraft on Bayshore.
