Happy Meals: Time To Buy (or Pick) Fresh Flowers

2008_04_10-daffies3.jpgFor those of us in chillier parts of the country, and that's at least half of our readership, we have been stuck in the deep depressing cave of winter, sans fresh local produce, or local flowers, for months. For us, since the last late fall zinnias dried up, our table has been lacking life. It's been downright sad at times.

Nothing lifts the winter blues more than that first bundle of daffodils at the corner deli or the farmers' market, like those pictured above that we picked up from a local grower at the Union Square Greenmarket last week.

In fact, daffodils are everywhere right now. They're sprouting in Central Park. They're even coming up in traffic medians. And there's word on the street from Janel over at AT: Chicago that Trader Joe's is selling daffodils right now for $1.49 for a bunch of ten. Beats the six for $3 "deal" at the corner deli. But even that is a good deal, if you think about the joy it brings to the home.

2008_04_10-daffies1.jpgFaith read Janel's Trader Joe's daffodil deal post and got herself a few bunches. She also threw in these tulips ($4.99/bunch!). What a difference it makes to our tabletops. Meals are just... happier.

2008_04_10-daffies2.jpgWe're not the only ones talking blossoms. Matt, our Saturday morning PlantTherapy writer over at Apartment Therapy, gave us a gorgeous post on 'Leo' tulips a couple weekends ago. Read it and then send him your photos of cut spring flowers.

I try to get flowers every week, and Trader Joe's usually has the best deals. The daffodils were $1.39/10 up here in Boston, starting at least a month ago--I bought three or four bunches at a time and they were fabulous. (Does anyone else dislike the smell of daffodils, though? I always end up having to put them on the table in the living room, because smelling them on the dining table puts me off my food.) Last week I splurged on parrot tulips from Whole Foods and they were stunning for a full week.
