Good Idea: Hanging Tomato Planter

2008_05_16-HangingTomatoPlanter.jpgYet another great idea for small-space gardening that we've found this week: the hanging tomato planter!

We love the concept of upside-down vegetable growing. This hanging tomato planter suspends tomatoes upside down, so there's no need to stake them, and the tomatoes don't touch the ground, so they don't get flat and mushy on one side. Also, they're high up in this planter, so they're out of reach for ground critters like deer and rabbits.

Tomatoes are known for needing daily waterings in the summer, and this planter is self-watering, so this planter helps reduce gardening chores.

You can also make your own out of five-gallon buckets. Cut a 2-3" diameter hole in the bottom and line with newspaper to protect the plant from falling out. Then cut a larger hole in the lid for easy watering access. It's not self-watering, but it's cheap (or free if you recycle food-service buckets from restaurants)

If you grow determinate types of tomatoes, you can use a plastic milk jug... but you would probably want to create some kind of cover for it just so you're not looking at a milk jug all the time.

I got a similar product, for strawberries, for my husband's birthday. It's available on Amazon (search for Buzzy and Strawberry), and they have a cherry tomato version as well. The cool thing about the strawberry one is that it's a special variety that produces fruit the first year, unlike many strawberry plants.
