You can have your front yard, and eat it too, at least that's what some homes around the country who are starting to do: replace their wasteful front lawns with edible landscapes.

Today's New York Times profiles the Foti family of Los Angeles who ripped out their lawn and are now cultivating pattypan squash plants, cornstalks, millionaire eggplants, crimson sweet watermelons, dwarf curry trees and about 195 other edible varieties.

The movement is overseen by Edible Estates, founded by architect Fritz Haeg.

The garden belonging to the Foti family will be the basis for an exhibition and series of events at Machine Project in Echo Park (Los Angeles) from Septmeber 29th October 30th, 2006.
