Garden Report: Look! Purple Beans

2008_07_15-Garden2.jpgWe planted a type of bush beans in our tiny container garden; they won't need to be staked or supported. We planted them on a lark, hoping for the bright purple beans they promised to yield. We were gloating over our new tomatoes the other day when suddenly a flash of purple caught our eye.

2008_07_15-Garden.jpgJust a few first beans dangling from the branches - how exciting!

2008_07_15-Garden3.jpgThey're not ready yet though; see the tiny seeds inside? They were difficult to split open and not quite ripe. But they still taste juicy and utterly delicious.

I grew some of those a few years ago, but when I steamed them they turned green...so disappointing! Let us know if yours stay violet when you cook them...

I've been growing these a container since March. Its getting so hot here in New Orleans now that production is slowing down.

I bought them at a farmers market at one point, along with green ones and white ones, in order to make a tri-color salad, but I too was disappointed when they turned green when cooked. They were still taaaasty though.
