How do you store your fresh herbs? If you don't have the luxury of an herb garden, where you can snip as needed, then you are probably bringing home bunches of herbs that need to be used bit by bit. Do you stick them in a glass of water? Or do you use one of those new herb savers, like this new model from Crate & Barrel? Reader Molly has a question about this too. She writes...

I'm always unsure of how to store herbs - wrapped in a wet paper towel in the fridge, in a cup of water in the fridge. What do y'all think of this Herb Keeper from Crate & Barrel? It looks awesome, but I wonder if it really works better than the other methods?
It's a good question, Molly, and we've been wondering that too. Has anyone tried this herb keeper, and if so, what did you think? Or perhaps you've tried the Prepara Herb Savor, another version of the same idea.

I personally have always kept leftover herbs standing upright in a glass of water in the fridge, with a plastic bag slipped over their tops and rubber-banded to the cup. This keeps many herbs good for a long time, especially parsley and cilantro. But the drawback is that I have be careful to keep from knocking the cup over and spilling water all over the fridge. An herb keeper like this one or the Prepara version is that it's much more secure and it can even go in the door of the fridge, which helps keep your herbs right in front of your eyes. I think I may have lost more herbs to sheer forgetfulness than actual wiltin!
Readers, what do you think?

I usually keep them in a glass of water, either in my fridge or on me bed stand in the case of fresh mint (I loved waking up to the smell for nearly a week!).
The herb keeper seems like it might work well, but I don't think I really need it.

I keep mine in a french press ;) Strangely, it works pretty well, but with just a little water at the bottom, lifting up on the plunger brings the herbs to the top and drains them at the same time.
Remarkably, C&B's herb keeper looks an awful lot like my solution.

I too use a glass of water--with cilantro and parsley, you don't even really need to put them in the fridge. They do just fine on the counter, provided you change the water daily!
I'm lucky enough to have a big herb garden, so I don't have to worry about storing other herbs. Before I planted my garden, though, my method was to use herbs as quickly as possible, because I think storage does them no favors. That being said, the herb keeper above looks really cute and I would have no problem paying $20 for it. :-)

I've tried all the methods mentioned above - wrapping in a damp paper towel & wrapping in a plastic bag to store in the fridge, standing in a glass w/ a little water, and keeping them in an herb keeper from The Pampered Chef I have this one: http://www.pamperedchef.com/our_products/catalog/product.jsp?productId=15679&categoryCode=NEW). Frankly, they all seem to work about the same. The one advantage the damp-paper-towel-and-ziploc method has is that it can accommodate a big bunch of herbs, like cilantro or parsley, which wouldn't fit in a glass or my herb keeper. The herb keeper does have a lid, so if you knock it over it's less likely to spill, but I think that's really the only advantage it has going for it.

That's a lot to pay for what is essentially a simple solution - a glass of water with a baggie loosely draped over the top to keep in the moisture. The C&B thing seems unnecessary.
