Introducing The Elizabowl Fruit Holder

072309-elizabowl.jpg The fruit that rotates in and out of our household varies quite often. But once home, we always have a problem storing it. Bowls cause bruising, the refrigerator can alter taste, and we just don't have space for those hanging mesh baskets. But it appears our prayers have been answered with the Elizabowl and the super cool video of how it works...

The Elizabowl was created by Sarah K. O’Brien and holds a dozen pieces of fist sized fruit in it's expandable and collapsible pockets. They keep fruit away from each other allowing it to breathe without being crushed. Check out the video below to see it in action. We can't lie... we watched it more than once.

You can check out a few more details on this patented contraption (which we hope goes into production sooner rather than later!) from our friends over at Shelterrific.

Would you use this in your home? Or would it just be another thing to collect dust? Let us know in the comments below!

Holy cow, yes, I want that thing. Though, I would probably spend way too much time opening and closing the pockets and re-arranging the fruit.

That's pretty darned cool and I could easily see that being the must have gift to give for Christmas. I love the euro music for the demo video too. Very cool.

I'd personally like to see the base of the bowl get a revamp. I know it's a prototype, but it's pretty ugly. Also, just thinking about the prints you could the (what I'm assuming is hard plastic) actual bowl part in are making me salivate. Marimekko prints on that would be amazing!

I think that it's amazing--I would totally buy one. Even with mesh baskets, fruit can still get crushed, and this bowl looks like it would eliminate that problem.

At first I thought it was some kinda DIY project, the bowl looks like that IKEA pendant lamp!

I have something like this that I found in an antique shop years ago but was made out of cotton. It was flat until you pulled the string at the center to open the compartments. The lady at the shop said that these sit down in baskets and hold rolls. It looks something like this...

Some even store candy in them for Christmas as a centerpiece.

So this design has been around a while but I like the modern twist!

Agreed, this bowl is freaking cool and yes, I would use it. I'm always stashing fruit and veg that I don't want to refrigerate in odd places and then they start to go bad before I realize it. And one bad fruit can spoil to whole lot!

HOWEVER, I agree with King of Arcadia that the base is really freaking ugly. If they could somehow make the base a pedestal, so the whole thing looked like some kind of giant, IKEA-like, flowery compote dish, that would be awesome and would make up for the plastic. It would also make for a lovely centerpiece, instead of a, "What the heck is THAT?!"

I kind of like the plain white, slightly see-thru plastic. It reminds me of milk glass.
