Beautify: Enjoy Your Treasures

2008_09_30-Beautify.jpgYesterday we talked about remembering to beautify your kitchen with flowers. Today we're thinking about little treasures - those bowls, plates, cups, ramekins, and other small kitchen objects that we find beautiful. These get tucked away in the cupboards - but why? Enjoy your kitchen treasures.

I received a tea set for my wedding this month and I find it so beautiful. It's white and classically lovely. It's well-designed and pleasing to the eye, made from bone china - delicate yet durable. It's the tea set I've always wanted!

I had it stored away in a cupboard but realized that I would prefer to look at it every day. I am still arranging this window cupboard over my sink, and for now I decided to put the tea set in there, along with a few other treasures.

2008_09_30-Beautify02.jpgThere's a pewter molcajete from Mexico, a Jadeite juicer, Mint's porcelain mortar and pestle, two vintage milk bottles, and a bud vase of flowers. Until I populate my window sill with herbs I plan on keeping my treasures out where I can enjoy them.

It's also a check on the impulse to spend, to acquire new things. I have so much already - there's no need to spend and acquire more. It's better to enjoy what is already squirreled away in the cupboard, letting these things I already have fill the functions they were made for and make my kitchen a little more beautiful.

What kind of treasures do you keep stored away for safekeeping? Can you bring them out for enjoyment as you cook and clean in your kitchen? What treasures do you already have out for display and enjoyment?

The teapot and set, by the way, are from Crate & Barrel - the Anna II pattern.

I recently filled my glass-front cabinet with our prettiest glassware. And, my green Dutch oven is always on our buffet, as is our aqua teapot. As I've gotten my kitchen to where I want it design-wise, functional objects have definitely become part of it.

My grandma recently gave me her crudite platter. Apparently everyone in my family thinks it's ugly, but I have always loved it! It now lives on a dresser I have in my dinette that serves as a buffet/storage.
I also have a ceramic coffee set that I bought at a thrift shop years ago on display. I find I use my "good dishes" more when I can see them everyday.

We use it all the time, but our orange dutch oven is something I love to look at and so, keep out in the open. I also keep my teapot (thought not quite so lovely as yours) out for viewing pleasure.

I keep my crystal candle sticks out. They were a gift from my grandparents when I moved into my first solo apartment. They hide in the ferns (so the cats don't knock them down) and sparkle when the light catches them just right.

My mom just gave me her fine China set. It is in the garage right now until I find the perfect cabinet to put them on display in. I love to use my dainty teacups. I am very attracted to anything that reminds me of something that belongs at the Mad Hatter's tea party. I love yellow. I am also dutch, so I love blues and creamy whites. I have dutch milk maid cookie jar and two dutch tiles that when translating the picture say "While the farmers fight over the cow, the lawyer takes all the milk." Perfect, since we are known for being tightwads.
