Back-to-School Food: In Praise of PB&J

2008_09_02-pbj.jpgLunch boxes across the country headed out the door this morning, many with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in them. Have you eaten one lately? We have...

We've been using our homemade Peach, Plum, and Ginger Jam to make open-faced sandwiches for breakfast and lunch — and they've jogged our memory for how good this simple combination can be.

About the photo above, Flickr member devlyn writes that it is entirely homemade: bread, nut butter, and preserves from scratch.

We also frequently add bananas to our pb&j. How do you make yours? Peanut butter on both sides of the bread to keep the jelly from seeping through? Crunchy or creamy?

I just made homemade PB & J for my daughter and myself for our lunches today - homemade wheat bread (from the King Arthur site), homemade strawberry jam, and store bought peanut butter - YUM! We often eat PB & J at our house!

being that peanut butter is still an exotic ingredient in Europe, my childhood memories should be connected to the Italian equivalent of this sandwich: bread, butter and jam but I couldn't stand jam and sweet food in general. So, my parents prepared me bread, butter and salt... still one of my favorite :)
I buy also peanut butter (organic, made in Germany and quite expensive), I like it on bread but usually I add to it cheese or other savory foods... I still prefer savory to sweet :)

It's my usual weekday breakfast -- peanut butter and marmelade (made a huge batch last year). Yummy and portable, perfect for eating on the subway.

Peanut butter and jelly on toast is the best breakfast in the world.

Growing up, I'd eat pb J with crunchy cheetos layered between. Don't judge me.

every time i bring one for lunch at work i am surprised by just how much i enjoy it. as a kid i learned to love them a bit smashed by the apple or whatever else was in my lunch bag, so these days i wouldn't really eat a freshly-made one. they have to sit and soak through the bread first :)

Last year I rediscovered them. They were never a childhood favorite. I've found I also particularly like them with crunchy cashew butter.

With the large number of school districts with peanut bans I wonder if my children will think of this as a special holiday lunch treat.

I love peanut butter and jelly. When I was a kid it was all I would eat so my Mom made me a special PB&J: on the first slice of bread put PB on the top half and J on the bottom half, on the second slice of bread put PB on the right half and J on the left half. When you put the pieces together it's like having 4 little sandwiches: 2 PB&J, 1 just PB, and 1 just J. My Mom would only make this sandwich for me, never for my siblings so that made it extra special. I still make my sandwiches that way when I need a pick-me-up.

Peanut butter and jelly is good, but peanut butter and sharp cheddar is good too.

...and y'know those nice, juicy tomatoes? Oh yeah, peanut butter and tomato sandwich.

(creamy pb please)

Crunchy peanut butter, maybe a little bit of honey, and strawberry jam for me! Sometimes I'd put some chips inside for some extra crunch. And I also like to "mush" it down to simulate the lunchbox effect.

I like to have a half a pbj and a glass of milk before going to bed when I need something sweet. :)

...err, they're banned in most schools that I know about in Canada because of allergies...

my daughter has a (tree) nut allergy, and is prohibited from eating peanuts, so no pb&j sandwiches in our household...

With hot sauce instead of jam. And sprouts.
