Did we all see Top Chef last night on Bravo? In case you missed it, the episode explored the Asian cultures in the Los Angeles area. First up was the quickfire challenge in which the contestants had try their hand at making sushi.
Then for the elimination challenge the contestants were separated into two groups - Team Korea and Team Vietnam and the object was to create one hot dish and one cold dish to be served at a charity event called Project by Project at the California Science Center, judged by guest Ming Tsi, owner of Blue Ginger.

That lychee fiasco was the worst thing to happen to Korea since Kim Jong Il.
It was definitely a bad judgment call. If he had noticed while they were still at the store, then he should have asked for the receipt, looked for the lychees, and not seeing it, taken it back in. Pretty sure that the accompanying Bravo staff would have preferred to not come off looking like they were stealing.
He did the right thing in bowing out from the competition.
Was the food supposed to be traditional? Ming kept beating them down about it not being 'traditional'. I didn't think that was the point of the competition. It was to entice and innovate. If they stuck with traditional, then they would have been marked down for staying safe.
Don't have a favorite yet. No one really sticks out in the competition. With Harold and Tiffani last year, you knew they were going to be the star cooks pretty early on. Even Lee Anne was a standout competitor. No one stands out in this kitchen yet for exceptional cooking yet, just exceptional personalities.
I noticed the same thing about Ming. I thought he came off a little snarky, and I don't recall anyone saying that the food had to be traditional. Maybe he expected a nice bowl of Bosintang.
And what was up with correcting Josie's pronunciation of "Pho?"
I thought the idea of using carrot shreds as a sort of pasta was an interesting idea. Has anyone tried that?
If you say you wantt to leave seconds before you're kicked off the island, are you really bowing out?
The new host makes the show move along a bit better. It's more similar to Project Runway now.
The "Korean" market they visited isn't even Korean!
The "Korean" market they visited isn't even Korean! I wish they had spent some time showing some of the actual Vietnamese and Korean communities and their markets.
