Paris Markets

Although we mostly ate in restaurants, we did take a stroll through a few markets, and saw some pretty incredible food. The colors were stunning, and the array of vegetable, fish, meat, cheese, and bread was beyond mouth-watering. White asparagus worthy of a wedding bouquet... full-fat yogurt drinkable like ambrosia... Ingredients are always inspiring, all over the globe.

It was Friday and everyone from little old ladies with pushcarts, to spiffy businessmen with newspapers under their arms were lined up for fish. As we headed out to another meal out, I secretly wished someone were making us a home-cooked meal.

I can only imagine how wonderful it would be to travel with both of you. Between the hotel photos and the food colors, I'm in love. Thank you, all of this is so inspiring.

On another note, and since I don't see an open thread for today -I notice an open thread from las week re: Trader Joe's (I've been offline a bit). I didn't read all the posts but I want to add something here. I've shopped extensively at both Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, Whole Foods being my current place. I shopped them both in LA and now in NY. Whole Foods, while more expensive and "trendy" is by and large (my experience) a better place in general. Trader Joe's may have better deals, but compare their store brand cereals and breads and other carb items to anything at Whole Foods, or A&P for that matter. They are higher in carbs, having much, much more sugar, and in many cases, higher in sodium. I guess it depends simply on what you're looking for. I want as wholesome as I can possibly get. So Whole Foods it is, although in California I would have to say that wine is a better buy at Trader Joe's. I don't know about the rest of the country, but in NY for instance, you can't buy wine in either.

Ok, my two cents.

A friend and I are backpacking through Europe for about a month this summer, on a strict budget. Many of the hostels have kitchens so people like us can cook meals and save money, do you or anyone have any suggestions of things we can cook on the road. I have no idea what kind of cookware we will have. But I am thinking that in places like Paris where the food is that great, a well-cooked meal, may also win us some friends on the road
