Spring brings us this special variety of broccoli raab. We discovered it today at the Greenmarket near the United Nations here in midtown Manhattan.
Yuno's Farms sells their over-wintered broccoli raab for $3 a bunch. The woman running the stand explained that these plants are in the ground all winter.
The snow and cold weather mellow this broccoli raab giving it a flavor the woman running Yuno's stand describes as "sweet" but still "very meaty."
It is only available for a couple weeks at the start of spring. They also sell the small small bright yellow flowers from this over-wintered broccoli raab. A fun way add a spark to a salad.
We can't wait to try it tonight.

Funny! I actually made this for dinner last night. I had no idea it had been over-wintered!
I got mine at Migliori I think. It was really, really good. Milder, but still had a nice bite. I thought I had just gotten a really mild bunch. Thanks for the info!
(ps. I sauteed mine with garlic, anchovies, chile flakes & vermouth and served over pasta made from farro)
