Fresh Produce on the Go: Farmers Market on the Mass Pike

2009-06-10-FreewayFarmersMkt.jpgWe were traveling west on the Mass Pike (that's I-90 for non-Massachusetts folks) the other week, and among the usual lot of roadside signs, we were surprised to see one for a farmers market at the next rest stop! We weren't there on the right day, unfortunately, but we wanted to let other travelers know to keep an eye out. Details after the jump!

The farmers market we saw was at the Charlton Plaza Travel Center between exits 9 and 10 on the Mass Pike. It's open on Saturdays from 9-6 for the rest of the season.

How great would it be to pick up some nice produce or freshly made food on your driving break instead of the normal fast food fare? Fresh fruit is also one of our road trip staples, and it would be great to be able to restock our supply at a farmers market like this one. Of course, we wouldn't turn down a few home-baked cookies or farmer's cheese either.

Have you noticed any other freeway farmers markets in your travels this summer?

I make a trip to CT about 2x a month, and always pass that stop. It is very cool to see a farmer's market on the highway, but unfortunately that one never amounts to much. Right now, and for most of the season, the only product sold is honey. In the fall there are apples, and last summer I never really noticed much more than that. Too bad. Someone should set up a mini kitchen with veggie burritos and grilled cheese! McD's would probably put a quick stop to that though ;).

On the PA Turnpike - Sideling Hill rest area between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh. I'm usually passing by during the week when it's not usually open.

There are several along the Florida Turnpike, between Fort Lauderdale and Orlando. Not sure what exits, though.
