Apples and pears may be the most prominent fruits of the new season but, at the Hollywood Farmers' Market, another crop vies for attention.
This week, we spotted fresh jujubes at six different stands across the Hollywood Farmers' Market, turning what we first considered a unique offering into a veritable trend. Also known as red dates, jujubes are the fruits of small, thorny shrubs traditionally cultivated in Asia, Iran, North Africa, and the Mediterranean.
They're more commonly known in dried form, when they are used in teas, soups, and medicinal preparations. If, like us, you grew up drinking them in tonics, you may be inclined to think of them only as medicine. We were pleased to discover that fresh jujubes, on the other hand, are great little snacks. Crunchy like apples, they have a slight coconut flavor. We've been eating them out of hand and adding them to salads. Any other suggestions?

I love these things! I always eat them like I would an apple (in hand), but I bet they'd make a nice tart or pie. They just don't last that long in my house.

My parents have a tree, and we all love them, too. Fresh is nice, but I do really love them dried, like a sweet, chewy candy. The dried ones also go into chicken soups and certain sticky rice dishes (both Korean), not to mention teas.

I'm told the tree grows well in our area. I've never had them fresh but I looove them dried... anyone have a how-to?
