Farmers' Market Report: Apples, Apples, and More Apples
New York

2009_02_13-apples2.jpgWhile Sara Kate is visiting Los Angeles and finding avocados, asparagus, and strawberries (strawberries!) at the Hollywood Farmers' Market, we're looking at the same old scene in Union Square. Apples as far as the eye can see. But we do have a reason for bringing it up, and it's not just to depress you if you live in the Northeast...

See, we tend to ignore the farmers' markets in New York this time of year. It's really miserable wandering around in the freezing cold, pulling our gloves on and off to pay the vendors. And for what? Apples, potatoes, winter squash. Not that we don't love all of those, but we start to tire of them by February.

However. It's important to note that despite the fact that New York state produces dozens and dozens of varieties of local apples, most grocery stores in the city still stock their produce aisles with apples from Florida, Washington, and Oregon. There may be a pile of New York Macouns, but they'll also be $1.89 a pound or more. All of the apples we saw at the market were $1 to $1.40 a pound.

2009_02_13-apples1.jpgWe also picked up some carrots, garlic, and onions (four small ones for 50 cents). And we spotted some crosnes, too. So you can certainly pick up enough for a quick weeknight meal, even if apples aren't on the menu.

I love that your photos shows Cameo apples--these are my absolute favorite variety. The perfect balance of sweet and tart and juicy. In fact, those bins look like the apple folks I buy from at the Borough Hall farmers market. Good stuff. In fact, think I might make some applesauce this weekend...
