See, we tend to ignore the farmers' markets in New York this time of year. It's really miserable wandering around in the freezing cold, pulling our gloves on and off to pay the vendors. And for what? Apples, potatoes, winter squash. Not that we don't love all of those, but we start to tire of them by February.

However. It's important to note that despite the fact that New York state produces dozens and dozens of varieties of local apples, most grocery stores in the city still stock their produce aisles with apples from Florida, Washington, and Oregon. There may be a pile of New York Macouns, but they'll also be $1.89 a pound or more. All of the apples we saw at the market were $1 to $1.40 a pound.

We also picked up some carrots, garlic, and onions (four small ones for 50 cents). And we spotted some crosnes, too. So you can certainly pick up enough for a quick weeknight meal, even if apples aren't on the menu.
