apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Calling All Jack O' Lanterns

2006_10_25marthapumpkin1small.jpgReady to show off your knife skills and your Halloween spirit? Pumpkins aren't just for pies.

We want to see how you carve your pumpkins. Between now and Monday, please take digital photos of your pumpkins and send them in to the Kitchen.

On Halloween, we'll post some of our favorite pumpkin pics here and we'll show off all the pictures we get in a virtual pumpkin patch over on Flickr.

When Flickr-ing your photos, please tag them with apartmenttherapy and atpumpkins so we'll be sure to find them. Also comment on how you carved your pumpkin: what kind of tools did you use, where did you buy your pumpkin, did you eat the seeds.

If you're having problems using Flickr, please post a comment here and we'll give you a hand.

Last night, I was at a Halloween Party at the Martha Stewart Living offices in Chelsea. The pumpkin in this picture was carved by guests at the party. The Martha crowd was pretty inspired -- using leather tools to emboss the pumpkins, punching holes in pumpkins for little white Christmas lights. What's your plan?

By the way, this isn't a contest -- no winners, no losers, no tricks, just treats. It's a fun way to see how you're celebrating this spooky, silly Halloween night.

I had some initial difficulties ... but they are there now, properly tagged with "atpumpkin." (I initially had an extra "s" on the end.)

I also forgot to mention that I used the "fiery pumpkin seeds" recipe from "How to Cook Everything," by Mark Bittman (who was on the Today show today making meatloaf in honor of the rockstar of the same name appearing on the show as well). I skipped the "fiery" part because my friends are wimps. The seeds did not turn brown like I wanted them too, but I lost interest in baking them longer.

I uploaded some pumpkin pictures! I carved some a few weekends ago with two friends. We knew they didn't stand a chance of lasting until Halloween, we just did it for fun. Two of us used a carving kit from the drug store and templates, and my other friend just went old school and made up her own face. The templates proved to be frustrating and time consuming. The friend who made the smiley face was on her third post-pumpkin drink, and I was still carving whiskers. One of my cats, Martha, served as inspiration and supervised the whole process from her perch on top of the kitchen cabinets!

Matthew -- I couldn't find your pix on Flickr. Did you tag them?

Hey Chris:

We carved two pumpkins and put them up on Flickr. I tagged them as you asked, but I don't think they'll show up because my account is brand new.

Chris,

I only just posted my photos, but I don't think they'll show up either (my account is also brand new).
