The 2008 James Beard Award nominees were recently announced, and they read like a who's who in cooking and food media right now. But what would you expect - the Beard Awards are one of the highest standards and honors in the contemporary food world. We were excited to see a few of our favorite chefs and even fellow bloggers on the list...
Blogger Heidi Swanson of 101 Cookbooks was nominated for her Super Natural Cooking - a great guide to the healthy and vegetarian kitchen. Our long-time bread-baker crush, Peter Reinhart, is nominated for his newest work on whole grain breads - Peter Reinhart's Whole Grain Breads: New Techniques, Extraordinary Flavor. And everyone's favorite Minimalist, Mark Bittman, is nominated for his vegetarian cookbook too.
The Beard Awards do extend far past cookbooks, too; they only start there! They go on to websites (Chow, Epicurious and Star Chefs were nominated), television, radio, print journalism and more. Check out the whole list to pick up on some good food media and see the nominees - is one of your favorite food media writers or producers in there?
We'll cover more of our favorites from this list along with our picks for the top winners as the ceremony approaches. Winners will be announced there in early June.

We covered last year's awards too; we were especially happy about Dorie Greenspan's win.
The owner of my favorite restaurant (here in Alabama!) is nominated in the outstanding chef category. I was thrilled to see his name among chefs from major cities.

I finally got a chance to look at Super Natural Cooking in the store. It is a gorgeous book, and to my surprise, I really want it.

Congrats to Rising Chef nominee Gabriel Rucker of Le Pigeon in Portland!
And to my favorite place in the whole world - The Gramercy Tavern! Your stuffed meatballs are proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.
