Hot or Not? Wine "Juice Boxes" for Grown-Ups?

2008_07_11-WineJuiceBoxes.jpgIn Mary's post on American wines for the 4th of July, we honed in on her reference to Three Thieves Bandit's wine packaged in juice box containers. We can't decide whether this is a fun way to enjoy wine outside or if it crosses the line. What do you think?

On the one hand, most public parks have rules about open containers, and these juice boxes neatly side-step the issue. Plus, a few juice boxes are much easier to pack into a picnic basket than a full bottle of wine and glasses.

But then again, we feel like there's something a little irreverent about sipping wine through a straw.

A big part of what we love about wine is the experience of drinking it, after all--holding the glass in our hand, hearing the wine glug from the bottle, breathing in its aroma as we take a sip. We would lose this with a juice box.

We've spotted these at Best Cellars and a few other smaller wine stores, but have yet to actually give it a go.

Has anyone tried these? What do you think?

why wouldn't anyone like this? if the wine is bad, then sure. however, if the wine is decent, then this is a great way to toss some in your cooler and enjoy at the park or beach...

Good wine is good wine! I'd certainly try them.

I've only tried the Pinot Grigio. It tastes okay. I didn't like the flow out of the box but that is a complaint easily solved by using a glass. The real win for me is to use it for cooking. I don't always have left over wine to use for cooking and it is such a waste to open a bottle to use 1 cup. The almost single use per recipe wine boxes are very handy.

This looks as promising as those little cans of champagne with straws! Love it!

I am just guessing here but I doubt those boxes are recyclable.

i think i tried the cab in a larger tetrapak and wasn't too thrilled. i like the idea though. although i have to say that i need a few more years of self-confidence under my belt to serve this at a dinner party or something :)

I'm with jongchen - I don't drink white wine so I keep a couple of these in white for cooking.

And, tetrapacks are recylable in some areas, including mine. I'm 99% sure they get reprocessed into that "superwood" stuff, but it's better than landfill.

@mmmiller
Actually, tetrapaks are recyclable (and were designed to be that way), but not all municipalities have the facilities to do it.

I'm with Button. Great idea for camping or for schlepping to the cottage. (Ours is boat-access only, then a 15-minute hike uphill. No heavy bottles for us.)

This reminds me of the boxed sake I had at a sumo wrestling match in Japan.

Yuck.
1. You can't smell the wine! Unless it is crap, this is essential.
2. If it is crap, why drink wine? A flask is more efficient.
2. Tetra pacs are only 30% recycleable -- just the paper is retrieved in the recycling process. I was sad to learn this.
3. Few picnic goers actually recycle their garbage.
3. We should all do what we can to buck absurd laws such as no orderly drinking in parks. Let's join civilisation!
4. Anyway, why not decant wine into your own transportable, lightweight, closed and reusable containers? Geeze.

I've brought them along back-packing and they're not bad - no worse than 2-buck-chuck. Whole Foods carries them in SF. What I love about them is they're light and convenient portions to take on day-long hikes (8 miles up in Mt. Tam) or back-packing (35 miles at Hoh National Forest). They've brought on some smiles with fellow hikers. ;) Wine in a box, you know, really classy. And there's no weight to carry from an empty bottle on the way back.

I've got one of these in my fridge right now. It is pretty decent. It seems summertime-ish to me. My boyfriend makes fun, but I served him a glass and he liked it before he knew it came from a box.
