While reading the article in this week's New York Times Dining section about cellphones being useful kitchen accessories, we paused on one recipe that was mentioned as being a popular click at KraftFoods.com: the Cheesy Football.
Yes, the Super Bowl is coming up soon, and we're not necessarily opposed to an easy cheese ball as an appetizer, even if there are pimiento strips as laces, but...
This classic mash-up of soft cheeses and mayonnaise, coated in chopped nuts, is one we've seen (and eaten) many times at cocktail parties. It's one of those dishes that just keeps trucking along. Really, it's not so crazy: cream cheese, shredded cheddar, green onions, and mayo.
Are you a fan of this kind of cheese ball? Ever shaped yours into a football? We love this simple ball of goat cheese with parsley and lemon, although it might be suited more to baseball. Or golf.
If you've got a good recipe for a fresh take on the classic cheese ball, let us know. We've addressed it before, but we're always open to new ideas.

The goat cheese one sounds yum. And yes, it does look like a golf ball. I hate spectator sports. This is why I married a nerd.

I love this recipe for a Roquefort cheese roll. My family gobbled it up in about half an hour.

The most popular cheese ball recipe in my family is actually a crab ball. And it is really easy too.
Use one package of cream cheese (I leave it out a little while to soften) and one can of crab meat. Mash it all together until it is mixed thoroughly, then form into a ball. Cover with cocktail sauce (also easy to make, it is just ketchup and horseradish). It is so awesome on crackers.

How about some rocking Southern pimento cheese instead? My mom makes the best--lots of grated Cabot white cheddar cheese, plenty of diced roasted red peppers, a tiny bit of grated onion, a very generous grinding of black pepper, and just enough mayo to combine (not drowning in the stuff!). Perfect for all kinds of crackers and for little sandwiches too.

I think it's sort of tacky. I wouldn't serve anything that looked like this. It reminds me of some of my old fifties cookbooks with pictures of meat gelatin molds et cetera.

Its definitely tacky but certain events really call for tacky otherwise known as fun---I'm not having caviar on toast points for the super bowl.

I love a cheeseball! Who cares if it looks "tacky?" I think that's part of the charm, I don't think Kraft means for it to be served at an Inaugural Ball!
Last week my mom made one with chopped jalapeno peppers and green olives, topped with paprika instead of nuts, had a nice kick to it.

I feel that this is incredably tacky and incredably awesome. I would eat so much of that I would be dearly sorry later. But... maybe happily sorry. This reminds me so much of my family.

I love it! Then again, I'm the girl who made a cheeseball turkey for Thanksgiving:

I guess it's just an American thing. I'm from Europe, and we don't do things like this.
This image looks like something a fat woman that shops at Wal-Mart would make. Sorry.

Fade on violet is dead on. It ranks right up there with that seven layer taco dip that suburban housewives love to make. Ick.

I don't like football, but hey, if you can't eat stuff like this at a Superbowl party, when can you eat it? It seems like just the thing to serve, along with that taco dip!
