Our favorite bedtime snack involves a cup of tea and slice of toasted homemade bread with a little pat of butter, eaten standing at the kitchen counter with a good book. This has been our ritual for several years now, and whether it's just habit or not, it's the surest way to make us sleepy-eyed. Nights when we go to bed without it don't feel quite right, somehow!
What about you? Do you have a favorite snack to eat just before going to bed?

This is mostly a weekend thing as I can't do this every night or I'd be twice my current weight, but there is no better way to tuck oneself in at night after eating some cookies and milk.

It depends on whether I'm hungry or not. But looking at that picture of toast with butter makes me want that NOW. So. Um. Excuse me while I go get myself some toast and butter. :)

no--just a tisane (with no sweetener), if that. With my last pregnancy, I developed a hernia in my diaphragm, which tends to give me a heartburn if I lay down with anything but an empty stomach... very uncomfortable.

It all depends on if I'm hungry. I absolutely cannot sleep if i am hungry.

I'm firmly in the snacking camp. In fact, my dad and I had a nightly ritual of making a mini-meal (instant noodles with dinner leftovers) at around midnight, when I was finally done with homework. It was like a reward for getting through the day's assignments.

I don't do this going to bed, but sometimes, I will wake up in the middle of the night and go just chug either a bottle of water or a cold soda. I get super heated when I'm asleep, so this is quiet nice. The only problem is that I do it when I am more sleep than awake and have woken up in puddles of water because I've fallen asleep with the bottle in my hand.

I like having a peanut butter sandwich before bed if I'm hungry.

When I was little, my grandma would always make me cinnamon-raisin toast before bed, sometimes with sliced green apples. It is the most comforting thing now!

A piece of toast with some peanut butter or half an english muffin with a little butter is just what I need before bed. I also can't sleep well if I'm hungry at all. Nothing to drink though except maybe a little water, if I drink too much before bed I have to get up during the night and then I can't get back to sleep that quickly.

I'm trying to break the habit of having some baked good every evening. Lately, I've been having a yogurt an hour or two before bed. My husband read that a handful of nuts before bed is healthy, so he does that when he's hungry.

Not really into eating a snack before bed - but there are times when my husband and I will have a light dinner and will wake up around midnight and have PB&Js - I usually fall right back to sleep after that!

I have a bed-time snack every now and then, but I find that it sometimes gives me heartburn or weird dreams.

i never have a snack before bed. interesting! i didn't realize this was something people did! i've always been taught that your metabolism is very slow during the night and especially before bed which is why i don't eat late at night. i can't afford the extra poundage :)

I am not a big sweets person and I tend to have just a protein bar for breakfast, but I love cereal so I usually have a bowl before bed. I'm with noadi, I can't sleep if I am hungry.

I love toast with lots and lots of real butter, and it must be accompanied by tea with sugar and milk. The latest I can have a snack is about 8 p.m. If I eat later than that, I have those weirder than weird food-induced dreams.

In my family the tradition is tea and toast - they think it odd that I don't want any - I think its odd they want to have caffeine right before bed!!!
I would rather go to bed hungry than still be digesting.

I have done the tea and toast thing when I'm hungry, but hot milk or a mug of ovaltine are my usuals in the winter.

@mschatelaine: if you haven't yet, you should probably ask your doctor to put you on some kind of proton pump inhibitor.
I usually try not to eat before going to sleep.

Alright, I'm pathetic - a vodka martini, or two, is my choice of a late night snack. Actually, I should say "was" since I"m trying to cut back significantly on overall weeknight alcohol consumption.
The funny thing is that, in all other respects, I eat incredibly healthy (I'm a quasi vegetarian).

plain yogurt with blueberries (frozen now since fresh blueberries are over), flaxseed meal, and nuts! Can't end my night without it...it's been the bed time snack for the last few years!

I've been on a strict diet for the past year, but I used to drink a tall glass of milk every night before bed. Nowdays the only thing I'll ever ingest within 4 hours of sleeping is a Protein shake. And only on days when I lift weights. I figure the protein will help muscle regeneration in my sleep.

its 1230 am and I am just finishing a Vermont woodchuck hard cider and a tomato sandwich on honey wheat. Yes I believe in eating before going to bed, but I work swing shift so that is probably why. I like to wind down after work. I don't usually do alcohol at this time of night, but tonight I went straight past the ice water and green tea to the cider.

Eating before going to bed spells obesity to me :D

i try not to snack on anything but fruit after dinner. though a piece of toast is especially comforting with tea at night, i'll have to admit... it's a once a month thing for me.

i'd have to disagree with those that say eating before bed encourages weight gain. usually about half an hour to an hour before bed, i have a serving of light ice cream or an individual pack of cookies. ultimately what's going to cause weight gain is that you're consuming more than what your body is burning off. as long as you know what you have room for(moderation is key) then you should be fine.

I usually wake up around 3 or 4 if I haven't had a snack, and going to sleep hungry just doesn't happen for me. I exercise a lot though, and have a high metabolism.

I love things to eat in bed, often an apple or a piece of chocolate. Now that I share my bed I don't eat in it as much, but I am also in the camp with those middle of the night water guzzlers. Sometimes a frozen chocolate is good too.

I definitely don't eat before bed... I subscribe to the "eat before bed and wake up with it on your thighs in the morning" idea.
Also, it tends to make for a crappy night of sleep for me. If I feel hungry closer to bed, a cup of hot decaf tea does the trick.

I used to snack before bed, but I found it would make me feel very gross in the morning, like the food just sort of stagnated in me all night and made me feel heavy and sick. Now I try to leave enough time for my body to at least partially digest my food before going to bed.

i don't generally eat before bed but that's because i'm not usually hungry at bedtime. if, on occasion, i do find myself hungry, then off to find a snack will i go!

if i'm hungry (and i usually am!) i eat a snack an hour or so before bed. either a little ice cream/sorbet, applesauce, pickle, toast. i absolutely can not sleep if i'm hungry. and i still sometimes wake up famished and have a glass of veggie juice to tide me over till i eat my "real" breakfast.
although if i've had wine/cocktails, i'm generally not hungry before bed. but still down a glass of water before going to sleep anyway.

I get into the terrible habit of needing a snack before bed on occasion. I like to have instant oatmeal, choc pudding, trail mix, twizzlers, dry cereal, sometimes a scrambled egg, and I prefer to eat it in bed while reading a book or magazine. I managed to drop this ritual, because I don't think I'm really hungry, it's just a habit.

like some of the other posters, i seriously had no idea people do this! as a general rule, i eat if i am hungry, because i definitely cannot go to sleep when i am starving.
i can't really imagine this being the healthiest habit to have though!

Thoguht this might be a more popular night snack. I eat popcorn almost nightly. It's low calorie (15 per cup) and is high fiber and shrinks in your stomach so I never feel too full for sleep.

I eat some protein every night before bed - yogurt, deviled egg, nuts, peanut butter toast, cheese. It keeps my blood sugars level through the night and I wake up feeling refreshed.

I go through phases...I have been taking medjool dates and filling them with raw almond butter and the a sprinkle of sea salt.
But with Fall in the air I have been rotating the dates with some canned pumpkin mixed with apples, raisins, and spices.
