We spent a chilly morning at the Dane County Farmers' Market in Madison, Wis., this past Saturday and despite a few early snow flurries, harvest season was still in full swing.
As we mentioned yesterday, the Dane County Farmers' Market is the largest producer-only market in the country. Its stalls are stocked with produce, meat, cheese and baked goods from local farmers and producers, including offerings from local Amish and Hmong communities.

• 2 Piles and piles of pumpkins.
• 3 Bouquets of dried wildflowers.
• 4 Bundles of dried chilies and garlic.
• 5 Emu eggs!
MIDDLE ROW
• 6 The farmers' market surrounds the Wisconsin state capital on all sides.
• 7 Mixed roasting potatoes – 10 varieties.
• 8 Gourds of every shape.
• 9 Freshly harvested beets.
• 10 Buckets of sunflowers.
BOTTOM ROW
• 11 Sorghum seeds for the birds.
• 12 Cabbage flowers.
• 13 Popcorn on the cob. Microwave in a paper bag and eat, or feed to the birds.

How lovely! I was there too, as part of a road trip to research a book about farmers markets in the Midwest. In spite of the bone-chilling weather, it remains one of my favorite markets, filled with kindred spirits buying and selling food. Here's my picture post of some of the farmers.

I wish I was able to get over there more often. I love the asian veggies and cheesemakers. (oh, and the sausages & jerky... and the bread... and...)

Hands-down the best farmer's market I've ever been to. I even like it better than the Ferry Building farmer's market in SF. =) Wish I still lived in Madison; I'd go every weekend!
