Straus Family Creamery makes a luscious Plain Whole Milk Yogurt that’s divine with berries or mixed up into a tangy raita, and a perfect replacement for buttermilk in your favorite biscuit recipe.
But there’s more to Straus than just the flavor. The dairy is family owned and they were inspired to go organic in the 1960s after reading Rachel Carson’s definitive environmental tome Silent Spring.
While most other yogurt companies cook their product in plastic, Straus uses stainless steel. They’re also innovators when it comes to managing their methane gas emissions; they’ve figured out a way to “trap” the gases emitted from their cows’ manure into their very own "methane digester" and convert them into electricity. With this new system, they’re generating up to 600,000 kWH per year.

Their maple yogurt is also delicious - I've only had the lowfat kind, but I imagine the whole milk must be even better! Especially good with toasted walnuts sprinkled on top ...
I haven't tried their yogurt yet, but I just discovered them at the store this week and just blogged about them! Awesome!
This yogurt is super. I used it for a panna cotta recipe and it was sinful. (hate to be so incredibly cheesy but it was). totally recommend it even for the morning yogurt and granola.
yes the maple yogurt is yum. but you can make your own by just adding some maple syrup to your plain batch. I wouldn't recommend the butter. Way over priced and not special.
I love all the Strauss products, especially the whole milk yogurt, which I've compared to other brands and found Strauss to be my favorite overall. I buy plain and then mix in my own additions and flavorings at home (it helped me overcome an addiction to my favorite imported French yogurt). The lowfat is also great, really creamy, no hint that you're eating lowfat once you mix in some berries and nuts.
Unlike Stacie, I *highly* recommend Strauss butter because I do taste a difference and know it's special, however because it's expensive it's my splurge butter (for baking special desserts, where butter features prominently, or when offering fresh butter to company) otherwise for everyday I use Trader Joe's unsalted.
My compliments to the Strauss Family!
I've been having a difficult time lately finding their maple yogurt in LA area Trader Joe's stores... anyone have some other suggestions as to where I can locate some?
