Olive oil ice cream! And it comes with balsamic chocolate sauce. Amazing.
Mercedes says that this strange flavor is actually quite common in Italy and the Italian neighborhoods of New York. If fact, sometimes ice cream is served with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt! Mario Batali's restaurant Otto serves olive oil ice cream in New York.
She says that the fruity olive flavors blend very well with the cream for a refreshing and surprising treat. Has anyone ever tried olive oil ice cream?

Olive oil ice cream may sound strange at first but it is really yummy.
Il Laboratoia Gelato in NYC sells it.

I had olive oil ice cream at Mario Batali's restaurant Osteria Mozza in LA. Delicious! I've been wanting to replicate it but I bet you need some damn good quality olive oil.

That picture looks like mashed potatoes and gravy.

I watched a Food Network Challenge episode the other day centered around ice cream. One of the contestants made olive oil ice cream and garnished it with candied olives. One of the judges said it wasn't "olive-y" enough.
Sounds nasty to me. All of it does. The olive oil ice cream, the balsamic chocolate sauce, the avocado ice cream... all of it.

Mozza's Salty Butterscotch pudding and their Barata and squash blossom pizza are the best!

Makes sense. Olives are a fruit. I still fondly remember a delicious olive-oil cake at Incanto in San Francisco.

I've never had olive oil ice cream, but I'd like to try it. I can vouch for sliced strawberries tossed with a good balsamic vinegar and served over ice cream! I wouldn't be surprised if the olive oil/balsamic combo really does taste lovely!

the olive oil gelatto at Otto in NY is delicious! i tried it on the recommendation of a friend who said that if i ordered it and didn't like it, she'd give me my money back. it was served with passion fruit granita, balsamic glazed strawberries and a basil/mint sauce. it was at once light and rich, sweet with a touch of savory (esp. from the small crisp of waffle cone with sea salt that was poking out on top), and all in all, probably my favorite part of my meal there.

I love olive oil gelato and made Mario's recipe last week. It doesn't seem oily or olivey really -- I think it just adds an herbal, fruity flavor to a normal vanilla base.
