Simple Green: Use One Glass A Day

While doing the dishes this past week, we realized with a little embarrassment what a ridiculous amount of cups we were washing up for the day. A glass from the bedroom, a glass from the living room, a couple from the kitchen — and all just for two people. And here we were wasting all this water to wash these multiple glasses when we could have just used one each for the whole day.

This is a major pet peeve of mine at home. My boyfriend's son (a teenager) gets out a new cup every time he wants a drink all day. No matter how many times I've told him to use one cup all day, he keeps doing it. Drives me nuts!

At least you're not using paper or styrofoam cups! While I think trying to save water by washing lesser cups is nice, there are more efficient ways to avoid wasting water: intsalling a low-flow toilet, collecting the cold bath water before "warm-up" to water plants or washing other things, making sure you have no leaks in your pipes, using an enegy and water efficent washer, don't wash your car at home (car wash places are more efficient and required to recycle the water for treatment in California).

More importantly, for those of use who do dishes by hand and are a bit lazy, it saves my energy!

my husband and I always use one glass a day. At work I also have a large mug that I drink tea out of it and then water in the day. My company has done away with plastic utensils so now I am bringing them with my lunch from home. Much better. I still have to work on my husband so he can wash dishes by filling a bowl with hot water and soap, washing all the dishes and THEN rinsing in running water. He washes them in runnin water. I think its a waste.

We have cats who like to drink out of people cups, so if we leave a glass unattended for too long, we get out a new one, just to be safe. We run our dishwasher only every few days, so I don't think it's a big deal.

I save even more by drinking my OJ straight from the container, and using the same water glass for days in a row!

Growing up, it was a rule that you HAD to use the same cup as long as you possibly could... My Dad was ridiculous about this!

To this day I still abide by the one cup rule (actually two or three... a mug for tea and a small juice cup in the morning also sit by my sink), usually until I run the dishwasher every few days. I guess I never thought it was odd until reading this and realizing people don't do that... It seems like such a waste to use a cup once and wash it!

And I have cats that drink out of cups too... but have learned to just not care anymore. That's probably gross... :)

I always use a glass/mug for a long as I can. I'm not a coffee/tea drinker so that helps make it easy. When drinking milk I rinse it quickly after the milk is gone. and its good to go again.

Ahhh my exboyfriend did this all the time. He would use so many cups in a day and I would always end up having to wash them.
