We found this at Lee Valley, purveyor of old-fashioned and well-made traditional tools. They say that this kind of stir stick dates back to the 16th century. It's practical for stirring oatmeal because it cuts through the thick clots and prevents lumps. It's also very good for stirring sauces, soups, and stews.
We like our wooden spoons very much, and we wonder if this might be an equally indispensable (and economical) addition to our kitchen tool jar. It's oatmeal weather, after all.

I've seen it in their catalogue but I don't see how this would work any better than a wooden spooon.

My Latin teacher had something like that--he called it the "enforcer".

Oh my! My parents have one of these and I never knew what it was until now! I don't think they ever use it. My best guess is they received it as a gift from my Gram, she is 100% Scottish.

ROFL! There's a name for the stick my grandfather (from Italy) used to stir polenta with? I wonder if there's an Italian translation for "spurtle."

I'm pretty sure I saw one being used to stir rice pudding at L'ami Jean restaurant in Paris (the rice pudding is one of the specialities).

My boyfriend just uses the non-spoon end of a regular wooden spoon. I think he saw that on Alton Brown!

My mother, an oatmeal enthusiast, knows a man who turns spurtles in his home shop from old orchard trees. They're pretty silly unitaskers to those of us who don't eat oatmeal every day, but it does get a lot of use at home!

I own one, with a thistle carved at the top. Guess I'm Pro-Scot. I got it on Lewis.

I grew up in England and various households would have spurtles but I've never seen one here in the States.
However, eclectica's brilliant tip from Alton Brown might be the way to go for me.
