Twist on a Classic: Square-Edged Wooden Spoon

2008_04_30-WoodSpoon.jpgWe've written before about how much we love wooden spoons and constantly reach for them for sweet and savory dishes. They look organic, feel good in our hands, and are sturdy and powerful while being gentle to our pots and pans.

One we don't have but desperately want: the square-edged wooden spoon. Read why and see Sara Kate's below...

The square edge allows you to scrape the bottom nooks of a pot while sautéeing and gives you a more targeted approach. The pointed corner also usually means you have one longer, flatter side to scrape the sides of a bowl or de-glaze a pan.

Classic, round wooden spoons are inexpensive. You can get them for a few bucks, sometimes less, at most stores. The square-edged spoon above, called the Spootle Lazy Spoon, is from Jonathan's Wild Cherry Spoons. It has a notch for resting it on the edge of the pot and costs $26, so it's more of an investment (or a Mother's Day gift).

absolutely. i have a large collection of wooden spoons (in my eastern european household, the most common kitchen tools were wooden spoons and ladels... something i find somewhat missing in american kichens) which i use all the time. My flat end/square wooden spoons are a favorite... they're like a gentle spatula and great for scraping bits off the bottoms of pans. Generally, i'll use a rounded spoon for big pots of liquid like sauces, and the square spoon for shallow pots and sautees.

I love them, too, especially when cooking things like creamy soups where I have to get into the corners of the pot to make sure everything's integrating well! They also give great spatula and folding action.

I received one for Mother's Day after seeing this online - I can see me requesting more for other special occasions. Now if I can just get my husband to remember to HAND WASH them!!
