The (Potato) Smasher

2009_03_10-Potato03.jpgHow about some potatoes with all this beef? Mashed potatoes, of course — the classic accompaniment to a good steak. And you can mash them up with this fancy new Smasher, designed by British group DesignWright for Joseph Joseph. See how this spring-loaded Smasher works, below.

2009_03_10-Potato02.jpgThe designers say that the outer ring, which is spring-loaded, grabs the potato and forces it through the smasher plate. They also say it's easy to clean (really?) and that it's great fun to use. Now that we can believe. (Via dezeen)

I don't like that style of masher. I prefer the wiggly wire one (for lack of a better way to describe it). They're much easier to clean than the ones with a flat perforated plate and I prefer my mashed potatoes to have some lumps.

Yeah, my first thought was that it would be annoying to clean too. I like the zig-zag sort.

And mashed potatoes aren't that great to serve with steak (baked or twice-baked are better) because there's nothing to start the gravy with.
