I'm moving this summer and will soon be living in temporary housing for a month or two. My fiancé and I can take a few essentials, but the rest of our house - and kitchen! - will be packed away in storage during this time. Guess which truly essential kitchen equipment I'll be taking with me!
We know that the temporary housing does have a kitchen and this kitchen should theoretically be stocked with "essentials." But we have a feeling that a rental agency's idea of essentials and our idea of essentials might be a little different, so we're hedging our bets!
Here's what we've decided to take so far:
• Chef's knife
• Paring knife
• Cutting board
• Measuring spoons
• Measuring cups
• Liquid measuring cup
• A 6-Quart Dutch oven
• A 12-inch cast iron skillet
• One loaf pan
• One cookie sheet
We're assuming (hopefully correctly) that the temporary housing will have mixing spoons, a spatula, a whisk (or at least a fork), a can opener, a colander, a few mixing bowls, and a sauce pan of some sort.
We've tried to go through everything we normally cook, and we think that we're covered with this list of essentials. The only things we might add are a 9x13 casserole dish and a strainer, but right now they're with the non-essentials.
Is there anything you'd add to this list? Or something you think we could take off?

For me, I'd leave out the loaf pan, but then I'm not much of a baker. Tongs? Will you be grilling? Can't grill (easily) without tongs...

When I stayed in a furnished (by a rental company) apartment, they had the things you list, except possibly the whisk but they definitely had forks. I think they also had a 9X13 baking pan. I know I ended up bringing my knives over, and an extra cutting board and my cast iron skillet.
One company did provide me with measuring cups and spoons, though not a liquid measuring cup, another didn't. I think there was also a baking sheet but it's been a while (thank goodness!) so I don't really remember. There were dish towels (crummy ones, though, so I brought over a few of my own), scrubby sponges and I think cloth napkins and placemats, too. You'll probably be fine with the list you've got so far.

What about a colander! I wouldn't be able to live w/out mine.

Depends on your cooking method. I just tend to throw a bunch of stuff together according to my tastes without really measuring. After thinking about it, I only really need 3 things.
1. A decent frying pan.
2. A saucepan with a lid
3. A good knife.

perfect. I agree with all the ones Emma listed. I really don't think I could add to that list.
Heres to hoping that the temp house has the untensils.

I wasn't even sure what a Dutch Oven was until I clicked the link, so I'd take that one out!
I would have replaced it with a few pots of different sizes, though, so your call.

Not that stainless steel pan, that's for sure. I can't stand those things. The way water or sauce frizzes up the sides when you pour out of it...
I would bring a medium sized well seasoned cast iron frying pan.

it's funny because the first thing i thought when i saw this post was "i hope they bring a colander!" my aunt stayed in a house on the beach for a month one recent summer and was absolutely horrified at the lack of one in her rental kitchen. it was literally all anybody talked about for the first week in any lull in conversation. don't assume! and be sure to update as to what IS provided! =)

It occured to me that they'd probably send you a list if you asked what they supply. I know the big companies have them.
And it's totally possible to work without a colander, although it's not all that much fun.

My Fiance and I just went through the same thing! You'd be amazed what you can get by with - the person we sublet from definitely had a different definition of essentials.
Knives are a no-brainer, but I also couldn't have lived without my strainer/colander, which definitely wasn't supplied!!
It's fun to be inventive with what you're given... cook in different ways and try different things. Makes you realize how much you own is really redundant.
Good luck!
