Luxurious Measuring Spoons

2007_01_09_allclad2.jpgNo one truly needs $16 stainless steel measuring spoons. After all, a set from the dollar store will function just as well.

Yet these All-Clad measuring spoons are so sweet, they just might be worth it. Their heft and feeling in the hand gives anxious bakers confidence.

For those who might forget the difference between a tsp. and a Tbsp. --especially in the heat of getting a chocolate cake in the oven before the company arrives -- these measuring spoons provide a leg up. "Teaspoon" and "tablespoon" are spelled out in full on the handles of each spoon.

Since the measurements are engraved in the metal, rather than printed on top, the printing will not wear off after many trips through the dishwasher.

One quibble: the chain that is used to keep the measuring spoons together rusted through and broke in the middle of a holiday baking spree. At this price, there has to be a higher-quality solution and we expect more from All-Clad. Does anyone have a suggestion for a food-safe way to keep measuring spoons together, maybe some kind of silicone loop?

I use a key ring to keep my spoons together. Plus I can always take one or two off as needed.

I keep my measuring spoons separate, as it is easier to keep them all clean (or to clean and dry one quickly if I need to reuse it).

What Emily said.

I also keep my spoons separate, but man, those are some nice looking measuring spoons. And, actually, I'm in the market.

I echo Emily and Joan. I have never understood why measuring spoons are "tied" together. Use one and you have to wash the whole set.

I got similar heavy-duty Crate and Barrel ones as a gift and they came on a hinged loop so it is easy to keep them together or just take off one and use it and wash it and return it to its pals. I like keeping them looped together so none of them go wandering off all alone and don't come back.

I have this cool one from the conatiner store that is one spoon, with a sliding thing to adjust to the size you need. I like it.

I have the same ones as Anne (in Reno). I think I have an unhealthy affection for those measuring spoons. They are so satisfying to use (or just hold), nice and heavy. I keep them all on the ring though, hubby and I aren't great about returning things to the same place after washing.

Caitlin, I totally agree. Same with their measuring cups, omigod. It's definitely unhealthy.

Good measuring spoons are important. I have some from Williams Sonoma, chosen primarily because I read somewhere [Bon Appetit? Gourmet?] that they're truly accurate. Apparently many are not.

I understand that measuring spoons/cups are easier to wash when separate, but if I don't have them tied together, one inevitably goes AWOL. Like the 1/3 cup measure...which disappeared sometime in October.

Everyone should have more than one set of spoons/cups so you don't have to stop to wash/dry while cooking. I keep my measuring spoons in a small mug and measuring cups in a basket in my cupboard. Keeps me from losing them.

Michelle--have you looked in all your dry ingredient containers for your 1/3 cup? That's where mine disappear to.

Mine all came bunched together and after about a year I gave up on keeping them that way. I would say the only thing that keeps them from wondering away is that I use a drawer divider in that drawer and so long as my fiance doesn't put them back in the wrong place they pretty much stay together.

I have a nice set of measuring spoons and I wouldn't give them up for anything. My mother always had those dollar store ones and the're always different sizes and they do things like rust or melt in the dishwasher or the measurement wears off because it was cheeply printed. I also tried one of those moveable ones like Shannon had and it never worked for things like vanilla because it would leak into the other side behind the slider.

However, my chain rusted out too. Any unique suggestions for keeping them together that will hold up through the dishwasher?
