Kitchen Tools: Do You Use a Dough Whisk?

2008_09_04-DoughWhisk.jpgTo us, these dough whisks look like a fairy princess's favorite magic wand, but apparently many bakers consider them an essential kitchen tool. Do you use one?

The idea is to use a dough whisk where a normal balloon whisk would get clogged and a wooden spoon won't get the mixing job done. The wire loops cut through stiff doughs and thick batters, integrating the ingredients without creating extra gluten.

Bakers use these special whisks to mix everything from choux paste to no-knead bread dough.

We've never used one, but have heard enough positive feedback from people like Clotilde of Chocolate and Zucchini that we're considering giving one a try. What do you think?

• The dough whisks pictured above are available for $14.95 from King Arthur Flour.

I think I want one! I was going to get a second whisk to use when my first one is in the dishwasher anyway; might as well have a separate use.

That is really visually appealing---I do have some trouble getting bread dough mixed but it usually gets fixed in the rising---still just to have an excuse for a princess wand, I mean dough whisk.

This is the perfect tool for mixing dry ingredients and batters. It's lightweight. It has almost no drag but still pulls ingredients into one another without creating a lump of unmixed goo. It really is amazing. And the price is great. The only challenge is it's length, which makes it hard to store. If you make bread (yeast or quick) you need one of these.
